[identity profile] anamosity.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I am new and about 6 weeks along. my boyfriend and i have pretty much agreed on a girls name but we are having trouble with a boys. I made more that I liked that I will show him but I'd like some more that are not popular names yet, could be either a very pretty name or a very unique name.
Girls:
arion
autumn rayne (we're leaning towards this)
astrid
echo
aspen
scarlett
riley

guys:
asiris
fenix blaze (this was my original choice but he doesn't like it)
brody
talon
riley
chase
kaos

if you have any to suggest I would appreciate it! Or any middle names that would go nicely with the above names.
Thanks

Just FYI, my husband and I spent most of yesterday morning making fun of a girl with the name ASPEN at my kid's doctors office. There's a fine line between unique and 'weird'. I really like Astrid and Scarlett.

Autumn Rayne really does sound like a stripper name :( I had a girl in my summer camp when I was a counselor named Misty Dawn and I felt so bad for her future.

OMG Fenix is meant to be Phoenix? I didn't even make the connection until you said it. Welcome to a lifetime of being called FEN-ix instead of FEE-nix, kid.

I'm not a big fan of 'unique' names, quite possibly because I grew up with one myself and didn't like it, and it's hard to comment on the choices of someone whos taste you don't really share. There are a few names that I like in the abstract, however, that you might like:

Whisper
Chicaine
Mercy
Ocean

They might be a bit out there for you, but maybe not.

However, if you do go with a name that is also a word, like Chaos or Pheonix, my suggestion would be to stick with the correct spelling - it doesn't effect the name your child will go by, but does make boring things like filling in forms etc less difficult.

I would also say that Scarlet and Riley [either gender] are both names I'm seeing more of [although actually the two I like most on your lists] so you might find that it doesn't have quite the effect you're going for when your kids get a bit older.

Is Asiris supposed to be Osiris? Because Asiris is setting your kid up for some pretty terrible nicknames.

Is arion supposed to be like Orion? Because Orion would be lively, on a boy.

autumn rayne
astrid -could create a problem with nicknames, but I do like it.
echo -cute, but now it makes me think of Dollhouse
aspen -once again on the nickname thing.
scarlett -the best of all of the female names you listed
riley -is ok... I'm kind of indifferent

fenix blaze - if you must use this I'd spell it properly
brody - too surfer for my tastes
talon - make me think of the car
riley - Probably the best of the boy names
chase - I'm indifferent
kaos - no, just no...

Riley is very trendy and popular. (http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager#prefix=RILEY&ms=false&sw=f&exact=false) Scarlett and Autumn (NOT with Rayne on the end) are the only names I like from your list. A lot of these names sound like names of a bad Mary Sue in some fanfic, tbh.

That said, whatever you do, please do not name your child Autumn Rayne. Autumn is alright, but adjective-noun names just sound like you were trying to write terrible poetry on the birth certificate. Plus, it sounds like a stripper. =P

Suggestions:

Ruby
Blythe
Meadow
Aurora
Skye

Earnest
Jasper
Jude
Liam
Spencer

Girls:

arion - is this "air-ri-on" or "are-e-on"? I like the second pronunciation better. The first sounds like a "weird" version of Erin to me, and I don't really like Erin. I think pronounced as "are-e-on" (like Ariana without the -a) is pretty. I like Arion Rose, and Arion Grace.

autumn rayne (we're leaning towards this) -I think it's really pretty, but I can also understand the other comments that said it was "too much." I really like how Rayne is spelled, Autumn Rain would be much worse for some reason. I don't know if I could use the name myself, but I still really like it for some reason.

astrid - I've never liked this name, reminds me of "ass-turd" even though I know it's not. I like the meaning, but not the word and the name.

echo - This sounds like the name of a dolphin. I also think it's pretty, and quirky. Again I am not sure I would use it myself, but I kind of like it. Echo Rayne? Echo Scarlett?

aspen - I don't like place names.

scarlett - very pretty, and classy. Scarlett Viola? (it's a very "violent" name but I like it)

riley - I see this as a male name.

guys:
asiris - I think this is pronounced "as-sear-iss"? I like how it sounds almost Egyptian but I don't really like the name. I would almost rather something like Osiris.

fenix blaze (this was my original choice but he doesn't like it) - I would like this if Phoenix were spelled the "traditional" way. This is also a place name, but since it's a bird/mythical animal too it's one of the few I like. I think Phoenix Blaze with all the fire connotations is really pretty.

brody - I think this name sounds really trendy, and I don't really like it. Maybe Brody Allan? Brody James?

talon - All I think of are talons on birds, which are usually really sharp, dirty, and not really things I would want to be associated with. It's a "strong" name, but I wouldn't use it.

riley - This also is very popular, but cute. I like Riley Blaze and Riley Alexander. Maybe Riley James?

chase - I think I met someone with this name? I kind of like it. I can't think of any middle names though.

kaos - is this pronounced like Chaos? I wouldn't want to be associated with something so crazy and terrible as chaos. It's kind of a cool name, but something I would use for a pet not a person, only because of the connotations.

Your name selection is unique, and I am surprised that I like as many of them as I do. They are different but sound really neat to me.

if I ever have a kid and can get away with phoenix will be in their name somewhere. It's a beautiful girl's name and a great middle name for a boy. I love it because of the mythology behind it and it's one of those icons that have stayed with me my whole life, if you know what I mean.

I think she does since she replied to my comment with: "You are the first to say something about the mythical connotation, which is why I liked blaze as a middle name"

Blaze only make sense if you know the fire meaning behind the bird.

arion- pronounced like aryan? yikes.
autumn rayne- I like autumn, hate rayne...and to pair a noun with a noun is kind of blah in my book
astrid - i like this
echo - this is my sisters name...and i've always felt sorry for her
aspen - reminds me of aspirin
scarlett - like this
riley - prefer it on a boy, trendy for a girl

guys:
asiris - dislike
fenix blaze - phoenix would be better, but really, i just don't like the name
brody - it's okay
talon - not my style
riley - cute, but i'm not sure it will grow up well
chase - it's okay
kaos - weird

arion - all i see is aryan. not a good thing.
autumn rayne - seriously? thats cheezy and ugly and just HORRID.
astrid - love it, it used to be on my list.
echo - as a middle name maybe?
aspen - its on my guilty pleasure list, for a boy.
scarlett - i am not really a fan but there are far worse names on your list.
riley - hate it. trendy and juvenile.

asiris - um...?
fenix blaze - i just realized this was supposed to be phoenix. yikes. i like felix.
brody - nice but popular.
talon - birds. dont like it.
riley - see above.
chase - ugly.
kaos - is this supposed to be chaos? stupid word to use as a name, and even more stupid spelling.

good luck :)

My thoughts/comments

Girls:
arion- I don't like. Orion for a boy is nice though.
autumn rayne - I love Autumn but the combination with Rayne I don't like at all.
astrid- LOVE this name.
echo- Don't like at all.
aspen- Don't like at all.
scarlett- Like a lot.
riley- Kind of trendy.. I've seen it a lot lately for boys and girls.

guys:
asiris- Do not like.
fenix blaze- I like Phoenix, but Fenix I do not like.
brody- Okay, but not really my style.
talon- Not my style.
riley- See comment on girl above.

kaos- Do not like at all.

My favorites are Astrid, Autumn and Scarlett for girls. For boys Phoenix (with that spelling) but don't really like the rest of them.

Some middle name suggestions for Autumn as you said that was your favorite girl:

Autumn Leah
Autumn Pia
Autumn Rhea
Autumn Grace
Autumn Shea

If you choose to use nouns (Rain, Phoenix, Chaos) I think spelling them in the usual way would be much more convenient for the child.

I'd suggest pairing names like these with traditional names, so the person concerned has a choice, too - Phoenix Blaze won't have an option to have a less flamboyant name, which is sad if he's shy or very conventional.

A lot of these names would make me assume the parents are a couple of knocked up teenagers who haven't quite gotten over an obsession with childish stuff like Harry Potter or the types of names you use in video games. I don't remotely know or care how old you are, I'm just saying if I saw a Fenix Blaze on an official birth announcement in the paper, I'd guess the mom was about 16. Remember you are not just naming a baby, you're naming a someday adult human being. S/he will have to use this name on things like job applications some day.

this is an excellent point - it's one of the criteria that my husband and i have when thinking of names - how will this name fit a 40 year old man or woman?

and to the OP, i think kaos, fenix, and talon are AWFUL. please don't do that to your child.

TBH all of those names sound INCREDIBLY weird to me. Chase is the only male name that I like. Only problem with it is that any name you pair after it will sound like he is chasing that name.

Autumn Rayne and Astrid aren't bad for the girls names.

Jesus Christ in heaven, Kaos? Really? That's a bad omen if I ever saw one.

Autumn is a name I like a lot - it's cute and I adore the season. Some of the other names, though, make me cringe. I mean, Fenix Blaze sounds like a comic book hero (and not a particularly good one) or maybe a combo move on Street Fighter.

As for Asiris, maybe you mean Osiris? It's a pretty neat name. Same thing for Arion; Orion (for a boy, of course) is a good name, if you like Astronomy.

Riley and Scarlet are nice, but they are getting very popular, so I think it kinda defeats your purpose. And Talon, for me, is how you call a bird of prey's claw.

There are plenty of names who are not in the top ten list (since you don't seem to like common names) and are really pretty. I recommend www.behindthename.com and www.20000-names.com, they have a lot of lists with all the possible themes and origins. You can find a meaning that you like, or browse Finnish names, anything. But please, please, find something other than Kaos.

Now, as for suggestions, I don't know... my naming style is not like yours, as you've probably noticed by now, so I don't think you will like my names. But I managed to come up with some of the less common girl names that I like - my boy names are way too conventional.

Dahlia
Danae
Lavinia
Evania
Jenna
Magnolia
Adhara
Calantha
Cerise
Layla
Ileana
Zara

I don't like a lot of your suggestions, here is what I think:

arion - I really like the sound of this, but it seems too close to aryan
autumn rayne - I really don't like this - dated, mispelled, stripperish
astrid - I like this a lot
echo - ok middle name
aspen - I also like this
scarlett - this is ok, but very popular
riley - NMS, also very popular

guys:
asiris - again, I like the sound, but the kid will be called Ass forever
fenix blaze - spelling! ack! phoenix + blaze is too much
brody - very trendy
talon - ok, middle name
riley - way too popular, for girls
chase - ok
kaos - If you really want to name your kid this at least spell it Chaos

Suggestions:
Autumn Aspen
Autumn Echo
Astrid Scarlett
Astrid Arion

Phoenix Chase
Phoenix Talon
Brody Chase

Other Ideas:

Hazel
Diana
Linnea
Mira
Iolanthe
Isadora
Halcyon
Blythe

Silas
Archer
Colin
Seamus
Caspian
Bryce
Keegan
Grey

Since you have an offbeat style, (not that that's a bad thing, we're all individuals for a reason) I'm going to suggest names I I think might interest you, but I could be way off.

Atreyu - from the Never Ending Story movie. I like that it has the nick name possibility of "Trey".
Cormac - Gaelic, and apparently it means "son or raven". I think that makes it kind of cool, and I like either just "Cor" or "Mac" as nick names.
Devon
Ronan
Weslan - I like the nick name Wes

I'm all about unique names, but these are just "trying-too-hard" to me.

The spelling of Fenix makes it look like a presciption medication. Arion is like the clarion call of an Aryan. TALON? Really? "Do the chickens have talons?" I hate that Asiris is misspelled, as Osiris is actually interesting enough on its own.

Scarlett, Riley, and Brody are incredibly trendy.

Autumn, Astrid, and Echo are all right for girls, and for boys... Chase is a bit frat boyish, but better than the others.
