I really like the name Mia... but to me it feels incomplete, like it should be a nickname for something.

Any ideas of what 'Mia' could be a nickname for??

I know, stupid pro eating disorder groups on the internet have ruined the names Ana and Mia for me. Very uncool.

I agree. All I can think of when I hear those names are anorexia and bulimia. I think there's groups called "ana_mia" or "pro_ana" or "pro_mia" or something.

I agree -- Mia definitely seems to nicknamey for me for a full name.

I've mostly heard of it as a nickname for Amelia, which I like best, but it could also work for:
Miranda
Melissa
Maria

Hm, I'm a Melissa and the nickname Mia never occurred to me. I kind of like it.

I'm not 100% certain this is a real name but I've always loved Caramia.

the only place I've ever seen/heard of Caramia is on babyzone.com
It quotes it as an italian phrase, which would actually be "cara mia", but it's by no means a person's name, at least not in Italy.

I've only seen it as a brand of artichoke hearts! http://caramiaproducts.com/products.html

I was going to suggest Caramia. I always thought I had just made it up myself (from the Italian, of course).

Annemarie
Malia
Mariabella
Marielle
Marianne
Mary
Miriam
Rosemary

Dunno, some of these are stretches, but they're all given as variations of the name Mia on BTN, sooo...

I like it on its own. I think it sounds nice and streamlined, but I also like short names. Amelia is my favorite of the elongated names suggested so far, though.

not particularly helpfull but i have a friend whose name is just Mia.
it completely fits her and doesn't feel like it should be a nickname.
