I don't like either of those as given names, although Max is definitely better than Bob. Actually, I don't even like Bob as a nickname ... it's way too ordinary, and makes me think of someone born in the 50s or 60s, at the latest.

i agree with you. i love max, it's a great name. unfortunately it was my grandpa's name and one of my cousin's [who was named after my grandpa] so i feel like i shouldn't ever use it.

but bob is just...ew. robert is a nice name, but just plain old bob is bad.

I like Bob as a nickname for Robert, I find it really refreshing on a baby. However, I don't like nicknames as full names, and I feel the same way about Max, which is a little boring these days anyway.

Ick. Both are nicknames and it just bugs me when people use nicknames as the whole name. Just a pet peeve. But you are totally right, Max > Bob.
