[identity profile] ophiomancer.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Hey, I just found a pretty girl's name that I thought I'd share: Narelle. I can't seem to find what it means, but I like how it sounds.

EDIT: The comments saying that it was "made up" made me wonder, so I had a look around google. I found a few sources that say it's a corruption of Narella, Greek for "bright one". Another says it's probably some combination of the names Nara and Elle. I also saw a lot of Narelle used as a surname. It's probably just a different version of Narella, though, because for something that apparently sounds made-up, an awful lot of people on the internet have it.

I've always found it curious that people in this community seem to cry "made up!" or react negitively in general when something sounds a bit unusual. All names are made up from one thing or another. It's not a bad thing, you know.

I don't know the meaning of that name but I was thinking about it and it sounds pretty but I came to the conclusion that Nanelle sounds a bit better, don't you think?

"Meaning unknown, perhaps an invented name."

Unfortunately, it sounds very made up.

I'm pretty sure that it doesn't mean anything, because it's made up.

It sounds like it should be a brand of nail polish remover, or else some kind of hair remover.

I thought hair remover too!

And just because something is a form of another name doesn't mean it's not made up. Narella is a name, Narelle is not. On that note, I think Narella is beautiful.

I didn't mean it that way, I know thousands of names are just spin-offs of others. But Narelle? Narelle is lightyears away from Seamus.

I don't see the big deal about made up names. I like that one. :-)

I personally don't like made-up names because they sound fairly ridiculous most of the time. "Nevaeh"? Aside from the obvious 'heaven backwards = hell' connection, it sounds terrible to me. Plus, if I saw most made-up names in print, my first thought? "Wow, their parents must have been very uneducated if their spelling is that terrible."

No one is saying anything negative about it being made up, you said you couldn't find any info on it, and that's probably why. You need to be less sensitive, it's just the internet.

It's not a made up name. I know because it's my name. :) It's not overly common but it seems to be more common here in Australia than anywhere else. I was the only Narelle when I was in school but I have known of and heard of many others. :)

Meaning: Probably derived from Nara and Elle. Nara - Old English: The nearest and dearest one. Japanese: An Oak tree. Aboriginal: A companion. Elle - She, a woman.

Origin: Australian

I've just gone and looked it up in my baby names book.

Origin: Australian
Meaning: Woman from the sea.

I'm from Australia too and have known several Narelles, so I was surprised when I saw so many comments from people who thought it sounded ridiculous. It's just a name, seems a bit dated to me, kind of like Janelle, but it's actually quite nice still, and wouldn't be considered bizarre over here.

ehh Narelle is okay, but Norelle is a much prettier, softer variation, in my opinion.
