What do you guys think of the name Shalyn? (shay-lynn) I was going through my friends on Myspace and naming off names and I think it's pretty and it's the ONLY name my husband likes and we semi-agree on. It would be followed by the middle name Elaine (my mom's middle name). I can't decide if I like the two together.

Does anybody have any other suggestions for the middle name Elaine? My two absolute favorite names are Aubrey and Norah (and they both seem to flow so nicely with the middle name!) but hubby doesn't really care for either. :(

To me it looks like it would be pronounced "SHAH-Lyn" - if you want people to say SHAY you really need to spell it differently. Perhaps Shaylyn? Shaelyn?

Either way, I'm not a big fan.

Agreed.

I don't like names that end in -lyn or rhyme with -aden because of, you know, the trend.

I do like the name Shale.

I like the sound of this name, but not the spelling (my first instinct would be to pronounce the first syllable like 'shall'). There's a figure skater with this name who I really like, and she spells it Shae-Lynn, which I like a lot better.

Elaine's not bad as a middle name, although it does have a lot of the same sounds. But since it's a family name, I don't think it's as big of a deal.

Aw, I think Norah & Aubrey are both so much nicer than Shalyn! No offense, but to me it just looks like another trendy -lyn name, you know?
And I agree with the others, I wanted to pronounced it 'Shah-lyn as well.

But regardless of what I think of the name itself, I think it doesn't flow with Elaine at all, mostly because -lyn and -laine sound very similar.
Elaine is a nice name though, and Norah Elaine sounds great. Is there no way you can convince him? ;)

Try Nymbler (http://www.nymbler.com/)...who knows, you might stumble upon a name you both like.

I think the name is super cute, my sister has a friend named Shay Lynn. I'm not picking on the way it's spelled, but a lot of people are going to wind up calling her Shah-lyn. It's a really cute name though! I love it. I'm not good with girl names, but I can try to think of some middle names that flow with the name.

I'm kinda confused by how somebody who loves Elaine — which I find beautiful, tasteful, versatile, and underrated — would also go for "Shalyn", which to me looks trendy, made-up, vapid, overly cutesy, and most definitely date-stamped. In a way, it's even worse than the normal Peyton/Kaylin/Madysin, since the pronunciation is not clear or intuitive.

I realize people have all sorts of tastes, but generally I can just scroll past the Briley/Khylie/Kaylee/Raelie/Rilee/Shaylee/Baylin/Keylin/Shaelyn stuff. The fact that you're going with such a nice middle name really makes me pause.

What names (or kinds of names) does your husband like? I'm convinced there's hope, because of Elaine (and Norah/Aubrey), but to better fill out the Venn diagram below we need more info!

See?

There MUST be something else in the overlap...

Hahaha, this diagram wins, and my thoughts exactly.

Elaine/Aubrey/Norah >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Shaylyn. Seriously, OP, there is no comparison: it's not cute, it's not yooneek, don't use it. =(

I really really like the name Audrina. It sounds classy but also cute in my mind. He may like the name just because he likes it, or he may like it because he associates it with a hot young woman, but he -does- like it, and I think its the best compromise in this situation, because Shalyn is just..dislike.

Audrina's not so bad. And how about Rebecca or Jacqueline, with the explicit promise that he can call her Becky or Jacky?

What about something like Saffron or Rachael? He sounds like he wants a name he can imagine belonging to a hot MTV personality, and Ms. Maddow is quite cute.

OR! What about Josephine, and he can call her Jo or Joey? Certainly is a name that's working for Jo Whiley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jo_Whiley)!

I agree not a big fan of Shalyn. I like Aubrey but prefer Audrey. And I like Norah but prefer it spelt Nora.

I like it better spelled Shaelynn. She can go by Shae or Lynn.
I think it fits with Elaine.

I went to school with a girl named Shaelynn - I'm not a huge fan of the name but I prefer that spelling.

Alternatively, I also went to school with a girl named Shaila (could also be spelled Shaela) and, while I'm still not in love with the name, I like it much more than Shaelynn.

Honestly, I hate Shalyn. It looks like it should be pronounced 'SHALL-in'. But I wouldn't like it spelled differently, either... it's just taking a trendy prefix (shay) plus a trendy suffix (lyn), and creating an ultimately really trendy-looking and trendy-sounding name. Which isn't my style at all.

I love Norah. It's my favourite name. I also think it sounds good with Elaine. It's a shame your husband doesn't like it. What about...

Charlotte Elaine
Audrey Elaine
Grace Elaine
Ada Elaine
Eleanor Elaine
Cassandra Elaine
Ivy Elaine

Matilda Elaine

ETA: plus, shalyn elaine sounds terrible. its just way too much ay/lay sound.

No matter how many people may have used it, it still looks like something made up by someone not very imaginative, to be honest.

I do quite like Shae, if you're looking for something modern and different...

I like it, it's on my list, paired with Zoraya for a middle name. I spell it Shaylin though. Shailyn is apparently derived from Shayla which means from the fairy palace. I think if it's a name you both agree on and like, go for it. Everyone has different tastes because we're different. It's not like it's something atrocious. I do agree though that it doesn't sound great paired with Elaine for a middle name.

Some middle name suggestions:
Audrina
Carys
Chloe
Deirdre
Fiona
Grace
Hannah
Hope
Mackenzie
Mira
Nancy
Naomi
Ophelia
Patricia
Willow

Also, I suggest Sherilyn as a possible alternate to Shalyn/Shaelyn/Shailyn/Shaylin, and any other spelling variations haha.

What about just Shea, possibly with Lynn as a middle name? Shea Lynn Elaine, and you can call her Shea Lynn pronounced the same as Shalyn. Shalyn sounds nice, but looks ugly.

I can't stop thinking about this, and it occurred to me that nobody has mentioned the obvious fact that Audrey is exactly totally halfway between one of your top choice names (Aubrey) and one of his (Audrina). Wouldn't Audrey really just be a fantastic compromise?
