(no subject)

Are there any normal (so not U'Neeq, Cre8tyve, etc) names that you just don't like for one reason or another?

For me, names that might generally be considered close to my 'style' of names that I don't like are:
William (but I like Liam)
Joshua
Jacob
Jackson
Mitchell
Jordan (for either sex)
Madison
Addison (but I like it on a boy!)
Ashleigh
Lauren
Sarah
and almost anything ending in -lyn

Reason? Many of these are names of kids I have taught. Usually, a bad kid will tarnish a decent name for me. It's annoying.

I don't like the names Emmet and Jocelyn.

I hate Emily!

I also hate old man names like Henry, Walter, Stanley, etc.

Jason
Jacob
Mitchell
Mark (except as an honoring/middle name)
Kyle

Katelyn
Ashley (any spelling, really)
Jessica
Jennifer
Lauren
Hannah

It's pronounced nev-ay-ah and it's very ick.

[identity profile] stormqueen280.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It looks like a hooker name.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/__recidivist/ 2009-02-12 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think I really like the names Silas and Elias, but I'm always sure I am going to pronounce them wrong, so they make me really self-conscious. They also seem vaguely sexual and if someone can explain to me how or why that is, I'd appreciate it.

[identity profile] lind-saay.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahahaha, I have no idea, but that's a really funny/interesting reaction to have to a name.

[identity profile] onzeminutos.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I thought you were going to say you hate those names and I was nooo, how can anybody hate them! :>) Can't help you on the pronunciation because I pronounce them the way the are pronounced here up North and I don't know if you want to hear that or the way the are pronounced in English speaking countries.

[identity profile] freezemyazaleas.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
Desiree and Jasmine are two of my least favorite names. They make me cringe when I hear them.

[identity profile] jordle.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
Ruby, Ethan and Nathan.

[identity profile] allisondawn.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
ISABELLA.

Hate it, hate it, hate it.

Mackenzie, too. I've always thought it was an ugly, trashy-sounding name.

I'm really not a fan of most girls names that end with the "ah" sound (and most of them do - which is one of the reasons why I dislike it so much), but Isabella is the worst for me. Yuck.

I'm not a fan of really common names. I honestly have no idea why some people would name their children something that a handful of their other peers will be sporting. Other than naming after a relative, that is. Stuff like Michael, Steven, Stephanie, Jennifer, Ashley, etc etc.

[identity profile] stormqueen280.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Things is, if you forget all the common names, you get stuck with the U'niq variety...

[identity profile] allisondawn.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's not like names are just separated into common or ridiculous with no middle ground.

[identity profile] stormqueen280.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course not, but some people think they are. If you look enough, you can find a nice name that's not too common, but people prefer to err in the side of caution, so to speak.

[identity profile] thejoysofjess.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I would name my child something that is common if I liked it. I'm of the opinion that there will be more to my child's personality than their name. If the name Leah becomes really popular in the next couple of years, I will probably still use it and just be thankful that other people's taste has gotten better. ;)

Rhiannon
Lola
Kelly for a girl
Ruby

oh my gosh I know theres so many more but I can't think of them now for some reason.

[identity profile] arbus.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
aside from the trashy (madison, crystal, nevaeh, the mac names - mackenzie, makenna, etc) and the trendee (jayden, brayden, aiden) i really REALLY dislike the unisex set...

taylor
morgan
bailey
jordan
riley
etc...

every single one makes me cringe.

[identity profile] onzeminutos.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh those unisex names are just vile.

[identity profile] daydream11.livejournal.com 2009-02-13 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Amen.

[identity profile] sandtree.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Jacob, Ethan, Sebastian, Logan, Cooper, Keegan, Keenan, Zachary...

Addison, Chloe, Zoe, Hailey, Kaylee, Riley, Kylie...

There are more, but those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

[identity profile] night-sky-dream.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I usually like 'old fashioned' names but I don't like Charlotte and Victoria at all.

[identity profile] xx-imagination.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like most names with a PH, TH, SH, or X sound in them (Christopher, Alexander, Charlotte). I also am not a fan of names with R in them (Robert, etc), or names that repeat consonants (Lillian). I also tend to dislike things that are really trendy (Aidenm, Madison). I also tend to dislike girls names that end in A and prefer the alternatives. (Therese over Theresa)

I agree with almost all the ones you've listed.

[identity profile] laminy.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate anything that has to do with Lily. Lily, Lilly, Lillian, Lilith. I find it horribly ugly.

[identity profile] thellamaqueen.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't stand the names Joshua and Tabatha/Tabitha. I don't know why... but I've just always found them to be ugly names.
I also tend not to like people named Alissa... I've just never known a nice person by that name. :P

[identity profile] thejoysofjess.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I teach, so there are a ton of names that I just cannot stand anymore.

Justin
Zachary
Portia
Alanna

Those are the ones I really would not use, because everyone I've met with those names has been a personality type that I do not enjoy.

[identity profile] home-to-me.livejournal.com 2009-02-13 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I dislike the Kaylee family. Kailie, Kaylee, Kaylyn, etc. There's about a million alternate spellings of them, and I feel like they're such... little girl names. I think Katelyn/Caitlin/Caitlyn are okay, though

[identity profile] daydream11.livejournal.com 2009-02-13 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, though I hate the Caitlins, too. You can never grow out of them, IMO.

[identity profile] home-to-me.livejournal.com 2009-02-13 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I think Kate can sound grown-up, though. Which is why I let Katelyn slide. lol. But then I guess you ought to call her Kathleen or Katherine and use Kate. *shrugs*

[identity profile] daydream11.livejournal.com 2009-02-13 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Abigail - just hits a raw nerve for some reason
Hannah - the name's just ugly, IMO
Most Virtue Names (Faith, Grace, etc.) - cheesy, tacky, cruel kid-branding
Travis - trailer trash-y
Dante - sounds low-class, even though the name is old

[identity profile] bmwbabe007.livejournal.com 2009-02-14 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I hate the nickname Gabby, although I think Gabriella is a nice name.

I really don't like the names Kinsey, Desiree, Renee, or Katie/Catie.
