culture clash

My husband and I have talked about first names for the baby quite a bit. Recently though, I was writing out potential first names and middle names together in a chart. I showed it to my hubby and his response was, "What's this obsession with middle names?" In his culture, he's from Mexico, he said they didn't use middle names. We weren't arguing about it, I just had the assumption that our baby would get a middle name, and he had never thought of it. I told him it was so that if the child didn't like the first name, they would always have a legal backup name. Anyway, he's cool with the idea, I just thought it was an interesting cultural experience ;-)

My children have two middle names, one is an actual middle name and the other is my maiden name. In my culture there isn't a "middle name", the middle name is actually the mother's maiden name. So I decided that they were to carry both forms of the "middle name".
