My cousin Talitha is having a daughter who she plans to name Shoshana Carleigh.

I dont like it. At all. I told her that the name doesnt appeal to me at all, but she wouldnt stand for it. Maybe it will grow on me, but I'm not sure.

As for names I suggested-
Kirie: Ky-ree. I am a mommy's helper for three little girls, one of which's name is Kirie Nicole. I dont exactly like Nicole, but I adore Kirie.

Adéla: Another one of the girls I am a mommy's helper for is named Macie Adéla. I LOVE it, especially Adéla.

Tallie said she'd consider them at least a tiny bit, but she doesn't seem to like them.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to names like Shoshana or Carleigh that she might like?

Kyrie means "Lord" (as in Lord Jesus in the prayer "Kyrie Eleison," Lord have mercy) in Greek. So, yeah :(

i think that kyrie is pronounced differently, though... isn't it keer-eee-ay?

From: [identity profile] ladyofmoonlight.livejournal.com
Yeah, Kirie is pronounced syllabically, kee-ree-ay. I mean, you could pronounce it Kirie if you're using it as a made up name or something, but if you're going for the correct pronunciation from Japanese it has all three syllables.

It's Japanese too? Is it a name, or a word for something?

(I think longwrongroad was referring to Kyrie as in "Lord (have mercy)" in Greek)

When i sing Mass.. Kyrie, it's pronounced keer-eee-ay, latin? hmm i don't know, i'm not religious so i don't have a clue what i'm singing about!

Greek. It's the vocative of Kyrios, which means Lord, so "Kyrie" itself means something like "O Lord."

So yes, Kee-ree-ay.

I thought kyrie eliason was irishish... celtic? that's what our church lady choir director said, but there is a very big possibility she'd wrong!

Yes, she's most definitely wrong!

Not a fan of Carleigh spelled that way, but Shoshana is awesome.

Adela is nice, but Kirie is a huuuuge NO for me.

So, all in all, I like the name your cousin's chosen the best...

Wow, that is a mouthful, it is her baby though, so ultamitaly it's her choice.

Just call her "Shana"? or some other nn?

Shana Rene (SHAY-na) is my little sisters name...
I guess "Shana Carleigh" would work... and be a little bit less of a mouthful?

Like you, I don't like the name your cousin chose. But it's her baby, so she (and the father) should be the only ones deciding, unless she specifically asked you for suggestions.

I like Shoshanna okay (not fond of it with one N since it just looks weird to me), just don't call her Shoshi. My boss's daughter's name was Shoshanna and they called the poor kid Shoshi. I never could say it with a perfectly straight face.
I prefer just Shoshana Leigh if she wants to use Leigh in there.

I think Shoshana Carleigh is a really nice name actually. Carleigh isn't really my thing, but I don't think it's horrible, not at all. Shoshana is very pretty, and different.

soshana is not my style at all, but i like "carleigh". i'd prefer it carly or karli, but if it has meaning to her, cool. carly is a pretty name. plus it's going to be a midddle, so the spelling isn't AS important as a first.

when you have yours, youll be able to choose. it seems odd to me that just because you dont like it, youre trying to think of other names for her to pick instead. its her child, not yours. then again, perhaps she should not ask for peoples opinions (i dont know if she did) if she doesnt want to hear anything negative. seriously? i would just let it go. it really isnt your place.

why are you singling me out? pretty much everyone else here said the same thing i did but im the only one you snottily responded to. i thought i was pretty nice about it actually. whatever.

Everyone has beaten me to what I wanted to say.

I think Shoshana is unusual, a name I haven't heard much because there is not much of a Jewish community where I live. I wouldn't use it myself, but I like its meaning and I think it's a completely reasonable girl's name to use. It sounds feminine, is unusual without being completely bizarre, and is not very trendy. I wouldn't mind if it had been my name. I agree with everyone else that it could be shortened to something else (Shana) if you don't like saying the full name all the time.

I don't like the spelling of Carleigh, and don't think it's the best middle name for Shoshana, but it's just the middle name. It won't be said in full very often, and most people won't know what it is. So if your cousin loves it, fine, it's not the worst name she could have picked.

I also agree with everyone that you should just let her name her own kid. Unless she wants to name it something like Greentooth Wuggiwasher, and you are objecting to it because it will seriously affect the child's life to have such a name, then I don't think you really have the right to do more than just offer your opinion and leave it at that.

Date: 2006-05-09 04:57 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] morphinae.livejournal.com
Don't encourage them! In a month or two we'll have someone seriously considering Greentooth. *hehe*

From: [identity profile] monroehips.livejournal.com
Wow. I can't believe you said that to her. It's her child and, frankly, it doesn't matter what you think. Do you think you could try to be a bit more understanding and supportive?

And, no, I don't have suggestions. The Shoshana is a traditional name and, therefore, there aren't really any good replacement and I hate the name Carly (however spelled) so much that I wouldn't be able to suggest a close approximation.

I really like Carleigh. It sounds like a name for a cheekly, happy, little girl but it's also nice for a teenager or an adult. That's why I like it.

Soshana is not my style.. I don't like it at all.

But you know, I'm sure you will get used to the name. My little cousin is called Mara Pauline and I hate the name Mara so much but now it's different because it's my little cousin Mara and she is the cutest thing ever and the name is great for her.

I agree, Shoshana Carleigh isn't very appealing. Carleigh is a very common weird way of spelling Carly, which is a trashy name anyway. (or maybe i've just known too many carly's that were trashy...hmm) Shoshana is..ehh.. i dunno just weird!
But i guess it is up to your cousin, Talitha is pretty unique, i guess she liked that& wants a unique name for her daughter.

I told her that the name doesnt appeal to me at all, but she wouldnt stand for it. ohhhkay...it is her kid, not yours...correct?

I like Kirie, but not Adela. I'm not a fan of Shoshana at all, but I think it goes good with Carleigh.

Just because that is her name doesn't mean that you can't have a cute nickname for her (unless your cousin doesn't want nicknames).

I love the name Shoshana (with 2 ns though!), but I don't like Carleigh. Someone suggested Shoshana Leigh, and I like that, although I don't really like the name Leigh, I can understand wanting to use family member's name.

Let us know what she finally decides!

Uggh! I don't like Shoshana Carleigh either! Like you said it doesn't appeal to you one bit. She might like these names to replace Shoshana, and instead of Carleigh maybe Leigha or Kayleigh

Instead of Shoshana.....
Shayla
Seana (or the other spelling)
Selah
Serena
Sadie
Sandra
Selena

ugh I know the biggest bitch named Carley. I hate that name. Shoshana is typically a Jewish name, isn't it? Is she Jewish?

The names you like are beautiful, I love them.

No, and I didn't mean it like that. Its just that every Shoshana I've known has been Jewish and if she is looking for reasons not to name the baby that, then that might be one. People are rude and will ask her about her faith with a name like that, I would think.

Yeah I think the correct term would be Hebrew. Shoshanna is a Hebrew name. So I don't think being Jewish would matter that much. It does make me think of the Hebrw woman and her story though, so that's a problem if you're not into the Bible at all.

I ♥ Kirie (and Kyrie, haha)!!!!

Shoshana is a nice name, but I don't think Carleigh (ugh, that spelling) goes too well with it.

When I saw your cousin's name I had the same reaction as you, I don't like it at all. I don't know if I would have told her, but I certainly don't blame you for doing so. Upon reading more I found out Shoshana is traditional, but never having heard it, it sounds kind of made up. I don't like it at all. I've never liked the name Carleigh (you know how sometimes all the people you meet with a certain name are awful? Kim and Kellie have been that way for me as well) anyhow, I dislike it ever more spelled that way, although I like the meaning behind it. I like the suggestion of Leigha. As for Shoshana, I can't think of any replacements, I really like Adéla.
