baby name frustration.
Jan. 30th, 2009 12:48 pmSo the boyfriend pretty much shot down most of my name ideas (Anna, Elizabeth, Catherine, Ivy, Violet -- all 'too lame' according to him). I told him the one thing about the name that is a MUST for me, is Marie as the middle name (my mother's middle name). He agreed to it, so long as she could have two middle names (since his son has two middle names). I agreed. But he wants the second middle name to be one of his mother's names. That's all fine and dandy except her name is REXANNA LYNN. Am I a bitch for saying that these names are both terrible? Well, Lynn isn't bad, as far as middle names go, but if we're already using Marie (a typical 'filler' middle name), to pair it with Lynn would be like double filler, ya know? Even though it's not, really, but it will sound super bland.
I feel like I've compromised enough with giving up my favorite names AND agreeing to a second middle name. I want to just stand my ground and deny using his mother's name. Not that I don't love his mother, I just hate her names. I said I'd be fine using Anna or Anne, which of course, are lame to him. I'm not sure what else to do.
We did agree on one first name, which is Amelia (his suggestion, even though I liked it anyway). Leaps and bounds better than 'Petunia" which he first suggested. I don't love it, but I think it could definitely grow on me.
Amelia Lynn Marie. So boring I could cry.
So then I got to thinking that I could combine Marie & Lynn = Marilyn. Yes, no? I don't love it, but it's better than Lynn Marie. I'd put the second middle name between Amelia and Marilyn because they sound kind of similar.
So Amelia ______ Marilyn.
Any suggestions for the blank to take back to the boyfriend? He seems to like classic names that are unusual, if that makes sense. Nothing popular.

Date: 2009-01-30 06:08 pm (UTC)I'd say in fairness the other middle name can be left to you. Be nice, don't pick something he HATES, but I think he can stand to compromise here too, maybe let you use one of your "too lame" names, which I think are all very lovely.
in this case though, to me, the only ones that sound ok being surrounded by Amelia and Marilyn are Ivy and Violet. Maaaaybe Elizabeth.

Date: 2009-01-30 06:31 pm (UTC)I just got off the phone and he loves Marilyn, which is a huge relief. It's another name that could definitely grow on me.
I quite like Amelia Ivy Marilyn. Thanks for your help!

Date: 2009-01-30 06:18 pm (UTC)I can see your problem with his mother's names, but on the other hand, if you can use your mother's name then he can use his, too. At least her middle name is Lynn and not...well...Shaniqua or something! ;) Too bad he doesn't like Anna, I love that name.
Anyway...I think a shorter middle name sounds nice, since the other two names are relatively long:
Amelia Faye Marilyn
Amelia Paige Marilyn
Amelia Neve Marilyn
Amelia Joyce Marilyn
Amelia Claire Marilyn
Amelia Jewel Marilyn
Amelia Blythe Marilyn
Good luck!

I love Jewel and Claire. Let's see what he thinks!
Thank you!

Thanks for the suggestions! Much appreciated!

Date: 2009-01-30 06:38 pm (UTC)My daughter has my moms middle name as her middle name (Kathryn). I asked her father if he wanted to use either of his moms name in her name and he said no (Nancy Louise). I would have named her Gabrielle Kathryn Louise instead of just Gabrielle Kathryn....I don't know. I see it more as honoring our mothers, you know? It has meaning to me. Plus if you're using your moms name it kinda looks shitty not to use hers.
I like the idea of combining the 2 names. That's really kind of cool.
I'm a big fan of Josephine, Stella, etc. Those don't work with your name though.
Either way, once the kid is born and you say her name a few times, it won't matter if it fits or not to you, because you won't be able to imagine it any other way. When my daughter was first born I thought Gabrielle Kathryn was weird and didn't fit...but now I can't imagine naming her anything else...

Date: 2009-01-30 06:45 pm (UTC)And you're probably right about her name. I've just been obsessed with names since I was a little girl and I want to give my child the PERFECT NAME, ya know! :)

Date: 2009-01-30 06:49 pm (UTC)I was a bitch about the name. I worried constantly about if I was giving her the right name and how did I know her name and blah blah blah. She's the only child I will ever have, so I felt like I only had 1 shot to get her name right. I worried about it alot and researched a ton of names...lol
In the end we went with Gabrielle because we liked Gabriel for a boy and it's all we could agree on....and Kathryn as a middle name for my mom and for his aunt that passed away.
I think when it comes to names, I try to think of who I would want taking care of me as a doctor or as a president. I know it sounds messed up, but I just try to think about how the kid would feel as Dr. Apple or President Pilot Inspecktor....know what i'm saying?

Date: 2009-01-30 08:55 pm (UTC)If you're going with what you've suggested so far, I would use a middle name of only 2 syllables or less. I think Amelia Ivy Marilyn sounds good. I think because Amelia and Marilyn both have l, the other middle name shouldn't. Also, what about Marilyn for the first name? I think Marilyn Claire Van Scoyoc and Marilyn Elizabeth Van Scoyoc both sound good.
Other suggestions:
Amelia Hope Marilyn Van Scoyoc
Amelia Faith Marilyn Van Scoyoc
Amelia Grace Marilyn Van Scoyoc
Amelia Ruth Marilyn Van Scoyoc

Date: 2009-01-30 10:42 pm (UTC)Amelia DeNell Marilyn
Amelia Anne Marilyn
Those are the only ones I can think of right now that I actually like with these names. Amelia Violet Marilyn sounds too complicated to me. I think Ivy sounds out of place, and it distracts the flow between them.
