Do you have names that are really close to each other on your favorite names list, or do you usually like to keep them within useable distance?

I ask because I recently started loving the name Caleb, but Calvin is one of my absolute favorite names. Its not like I'm planning to name actual children at this point, but I like to keep it realistic :).

Do you think Caleb and Calvin are way too close? I know they both start with the same 3 letters, but they don't really SOUND alike.

I don't think they're too close! I think too close comes a lot from when names have the same ending and kinda rhyme, like Rowena Anna or some such.

With me I am very much fond of the names Finnigan and Quinn, but they'd be pretty awful together. :(

Well I used to have Elijah on my favourite boy's list but Eleanor was on my favourite girl's so I had to nix it because they are too close I feel and we are using Eleanor for sure.

I don't think Calvin and Caleb are necessarily too close because Calvin has an "ah" sound and Caleb has an "ai" (like wait) sound.

They don't really sound alike, but it seems like you'd be going for a theme. Then if you had a third kid, whose name didn't start with 'Cal', they'd stand out a lot more.

I have Caroline and KarolĂna on my list, but one is the middle name of my second favorite combo and the other is the first name in my sixteenth favourite combo. So they would never ever be used anywhere near each other, thankfully, and even if they were closer, I would never ever use them in the same sibset.

I'm not really a fan of sibsets with any names that are too similar, or matchy, or theme-y. It's weirding me out that there's three flower middle names and three color names on my list, but I would make sure to not use them in the same group of kids.

I was thinking about posting about this too. I ended up with a few "pairs" of names on my list that I would only be able to use one name out of. I'm not too worried about it right now since I don't plan to have a million kids and I'm not making any final decisions until I actually have them, but I don't want my kids' names to be matchy at all, and I have considered that if I decided to use certain names on my list, there are others I would definitely not be able to use.

But basically, to answer your first question, if there's a new name I like enough to put on my list but it's similar to another name already on the list, I'll just add it and worry about which one I'll actually use later. There's no reason to go out of your way to eliminate one of them when you aren't close to having kids, and one of them will probably emerge as a favorite over time anyway. :)

For me, Caleb and Calvin would be too close to have in the same sibset.

Yep, I absolutely love both Etta and Esme and I know they sound way too close to use them both for siblings. I'm guessing one will be delegated to middle name status. It still really bugs me to think we can't use both of them.

For me, Calvin and Caleb are too close. I <3 Calvin!

If they don't sound similar, then it doesn't matter. I do keep Camilla (3) and Catharine (8) far enough apart, but that's because I'm not into alliteration. Caleb and Calvin are different enough; I wouldn't get them confused. It's cool; keep them close if you want.

It bothers me more when different names sound too similar. Jacob is somewhere below my Top 10, so even though I do plan on having a truckload of kids I'm sure I'll neer get to it; I don't have to worry about having a Caleb and a Jacob.

Or!

My most favorite boys' name is Henry; my top girls' name is Emeline. If I have a gazillion boys and am finally blessed with a girl, her name is Emeline whether or not it's close to Henry, and vice versa. But if my first boy and first daughter are born close together, well... I might give up one. :(

I have very similar names on my list at the moment, but I wouldn't actually use them in a sibset - like most people here, my list is currently longer than the number of children I'd have!

For example, my list currently includes Evangeline, Evelyn, Eva and Eve ... should the time come, I'll have to pick which one I like!

Just like glitterbug, I have Eve, Eva, and Evangeline on my list. I would have to pick which one I liked best, which is a little complicated with me and my SO because we both like different ones more.

I don't think that's weird. I like the name Kate, and so Kate/Katie/Kaitlyn/Katelyn/etc. are all among my favorite names, although obviously I wouldn't use more than one of them. I tend to like variations on the same name in general.

I like Calvin. I wanted to name my sister Calvin when I was two.

I like Harvey and Harriet but I won't use Harriet since I already have Harvey. Unless for some reason I had 2 more girls, I might.

I do! I love Elijah, Eliza, Eleanor (Ellie), and Elliot, which is just way too much. Plus, I also love Emmett, Evan, Ezra, Emily, and Evelyn, which are also too much, unless I want to be like the Duggars.

I don't have all of these on my list, however, but I would like to.

I love both Desmond and Dexter but they're too similar imo
In reality I would definitely pick Desmond over Dexter I think though.

No, but you'd have to give any other kids you have C names too. I don't really like either of the names, but I like that they start with Cal. Go Bears!

My two favourite names are Lillith and Elizabeth. I think the 'lith' and the 'beth' are a little too close to use, and seeing as some people use 'Lily' as a nn for Elizabeth... Also, a lot of my favourite boys names end in 'ON/N' (Morgan, Brighton, Deacon).

Caleb and Calvin are kind of close, but I think if you wanted a theme it wouldn't be bad.

I don't think it matters if they're close together on your list of favourite names, but I wouldn't have two kids in the same family with similar names.

If a few names in your top 5 were similar, I'd just think you're planning to name your first kid one of those names... then once that kid is named, your list for a second child would reshuffle etc.

That's why I can't have Silas on my favorite names list because it is too close to my name which is Silja. But I don't think Caleb and Calvin are too close because even though they have the same first three letters their sound is really different where as Silja and Silas sound really similar.

i think caleb and calvin are fine. i really love lux, but i also love rex. i think they're too close, although angelina and brad don't seem to have a problem with the -x names (maddox, pax, knox)
