Jan. 28th, 2009 01:03 pmDo you have names that are really close to each other on your favorite names list, or do you usually like to keep them within useable distance?
I ask because I recently started loving the name Caleb, but Calvin is one of my absolute favorite names. Its not like I'm planning to name actual children at this point, but I like to keep it realistic :).
Do you think Caleb and Calvin are way too close? I know they both start with the same 3 letters, but they don't really SOUND alike.

Date: 2009-01-28 07:32 pm (UTC)I have Caroline and KarolĂna on my list, but one is the middle name of my second favorite combo and the other is the first name in my sixteenth favourite combo. So they would never ever be used anywhere near each other, thankfully, and even if they were closer, I would never ever use them in the same sibset.
I'm not really a fan of sibsets with any names that are too similar, or matchy, or theme-y. It's weirding me out that there's three flower middle names and three color names on my list, but I would make sure to not use them in the same group of kids.

Date: 2009-01-28 07:34 pm (UTC)But basically, to answer your first question, if there's a new name I like enough to put on my list but it's similar to another name already on the list, I'll just add it and worry about which one I'll actually use later. There's no reason to go out of your way to eliminate one of them when you aren't close to having kids, and one of them will probably emerge as a favorite over time anyway. :)
For me, Caleb and Calvin would be too close to have in the same sibset.

Date: 2009-01-28 08:28 pm (UTC)Or!
My most favorite boys' name is Henry; my top girls' name is Emeline. If I have a gazillion boys and am finally blessed with a girl, her name is Emeline whether or not it's close to Henry, and vice versa. But if my first boy and first daughter are born close together, well... I might give up one. :(

Date: 2009-01-29 10:34 am (UTC)Caleb and Calvin are kind of close, but I think if you wanted a theme it wouldn't be bad.

Date: 2009-01-29 01:08 pm (UTC)If a few names in your top 5 were similar, I'd just think you're planning to name your first kid one of those names... then once that kid is named, your list for a second child would reshuffle etc.
