idgi, yeah he's the first african american president which is making history. and i voted for him so obv i have high hopes. but what if he sucks? what if he ruins the country (more)? i'm fine with naming kids after politicians, but do so after the fact.

I like Barack, and I don't see a problem with naming your child after someone who inspires you, or whom you admire, or you like... yeah, maybe Barack Obama will turn out to be a bad president, but that doesn't negate what he's already done and meant to people. Also, that's like saying you shouldn't name your kid after one of your relatives, because that relative might turn out to be a serial killer, or something. Anyway, that's just a general response to everyone who thinks it's stupid to name your child after a living public figure. Okay, naming your child after, say, one of Angelina Jolie's kids? Stupid. After Barack Obama - or Hillary Clinton - or Sarah Palin - or Queen Elizabeth - not stupid. That's just my opinion, of course.

Can't say I'm a fan of 'Quaheem'.

My mom got an e-mail with a cartoon strip. It was a classroom and all the kids were named after Barack (that, or some sort of variation) and Michelle.

My uncle was Franklin Delano. It was a common enough occurrence back then that my mom's family received a form letter from the White House thanking them for honouring the president in this way.

My maternal great-uncles are all named after presidents, so I have Great-Uncle Woody, Great-Uncle George, Great-Uncle Abe. They didn't seem to follow any pattern with the girls, however. My grandmother's name, for instance, is simply Jean, lacking even a middle name.
