What do you think of the name Margaret, nickname Maggie?

It's my name and I've never really cared for it. I much prefer the foreign variations, like Margarita or Marguerite. I feel like they flow better. Margaret has just always sounded ugly to my ears, but maybe that's because I endured so many years of "ewww! You have an OLD LADY NAME!"

I'm not a huge fan of Maggie either, but I like it better than the other nicknames for Margaret [i.e. Marge, Madge, Meg, Peggy, etc.]

Thoughts?

my niece's name is Margaret and she goes by Maggie. I think it's perfect for her and like the name a lot.

I also have a friend named Mary Margaret and it suits her well also.

then again, I'm fond of old names.

I've never liked Margaret either nor have I ever really liked any of the foreign versions either. To be honest, if it were me, I'd probably be going by Rhett, drawn from the end sound of the name. But I'm a Samantha who goes exclusively by Sam.

I'm not the biggest fan of Margaret, but only because it's nms - I'd never think that you had a horrible name if I met you or anything. I quite like the nn Meg, and I also like the nn Rhett as mentioned above, although I would never have thought of it.

I love Margaret! Definitely more than Marguerite, although Margarita is kind of cool.

I'm not a huge fan of Maggie, but it's better than Peggy and some of the others. My favourite nickname for Margaret is Meg, which I really like. Also, I had a friend when I was little who I called Margie (MAR-gee, not MAR-jee), and I liked that, although I think she goes by Maggie now.

It's one of my favourites, and I don't think it sounds ugly and old-lady at all. My sister's name (Margarida, the Portuguese version) was misspelt on her birth certificate as Margarita :(

My best friend growing up was Margaret - nn Meg, so I'm baised but I really like the name.

I like Meg as the nickname best, Maggie is alright too, as is Peggy, but Meg is my favorite by far.

I like Margaret much better than Marguerite (too French for me, and sounds "long", if that makes sense - although I do know an awesome person with this name) and Margarita sounds too much like the drink.

again, biased by only knowing awesome Meg's and having a best friend Margaret/Meg.

love Margaret and the variations you mentioned which allow for different nns (Rita, etc.) and I think Maggie is sweet.

I've always liked it...especially with the nicknames Maggie, Meg, and Maisie. :o)

I also knew a Margaret who went by Margo.

I've always liked Margaret, as it was my grandma's name. :) She went Marge, though, and I think Marge sounds more old ladyish than Margaret. My aunt is also Margaret, and for most of her life she had always been Peg/Peggy, but now her second husband calls her Meg.

I prefer Maggie or Meg as a nickname for Margaret. I also went to high school with a Marguerite who hated her first name and went by Maggie.

Margaret is a top 3 girls' name for me! :)

The nickname for my daughter will be Meg, but Maggie is okay too.

I really don't like Maggie, that kind of sounds like a dog to me. Margaret, I can't say that I like very much either, but I'd say it's very classic. Now, Mog, or Moggie, a nickname for Margaret, I love. I love it.

I love the name Maggie :D Not crazy about Margaret though. I once knew a sibset of Shannon and Maggie (Margaret). They were some of the cutest babies EVER.

I love Margaret. It's a family name (among others, a great-aunt Margaretta and an aunt Maggi.) My favorite diminutives for Margaret are Greta or Daisy.

I like it. It's a family name for me, being the name of my grandmother and one of my aunts. I like Maggie, and Meg. My grandmother goes by Peg but I don't like that.

I like Margaret better than Marguerite or similar. One of the good things about it is that there are so many short form options, so you can pick one to suit you.

At the moment I like Maisie or Daisy best as diminutives, but I think it would depend on the person.

I'm not all that fond of Margaret, but I don't think it's ugly or necessarily old-ladyish. Maggie is a cute nn. I also like variations of Margaret (ie, Margarita), and all of those nicknames besides Maggie, especially Meg and Peg...although I canNOT figure out how in the world Peg/Peggy came to be short for Margaret! O.o

I think it's like Sally for Sarah, or Jack for John. People pretty much all had the sames names, so they had to play around with them to come up with multiple (but not always logical) nicknames to differentiate between lots of Margarets or Johns or Sarahs.

Yeah, I guess so. ^^ I never really understood those either, lol. But Peggy might be the weirdest. XD

It's true, it's true. I immediately think Peg-leg, which seems to have unpleasant connotations to me. (Hope I don't offend any pirates in the community!)

Lol!

I actually kinda like Peg on its own. Maybe 'cause I've always had a positive character & personal acquaintance association with it..

I really like it, and my mom apparently almost named me Margaret and nned me Megan. Instead, she just named me Megan, and I've always been rather upset that she didn't name me Margaret.

Maggie isn't my favorite nn, but it's cute.

I used to really dislike it but it's kind of grown on me recently, for some reason. It was my grandmother's name and it's both my mother's and my aunt's middle name so if it grows on me some more I may actually consider using it, maybe as a middle name. I don't know though...it does strike me as a bit old-ladyish.

my middle name is margaret and i have a friend who always calls me maggie. i actually like it--maggie, not margaret.
