My daughter Lilah is in the first grade, she has a very small class, being in a rural area, that's not so unusual. What is unusual is the name of one of her classmates... Eboney. Eboney is a green eyed, blonde haired, pastey skinned little girl who has the unfortunate name her idiot parents slapped on her. She will most likely have people snickering behind her back for the rest of her life. Poor thing. But, I also feel sorry for her older sister too, so very poorly named. That unfortunate soul was stuck with the name... Hunter! I kid you not, most likely two of the worst names I've ever encountered here in this mostly tame school district.

I don't think Hunter is a bad name. It's fairly common. I've known quite a few Hunters in my time and none of them have had an issues with their names. Eboney, though, is horrible because once again it's just makes me think that her parents were illiterate. There's a girl named Kristal in the class behind me at my university and one of our secretaries is named Christel (prn. as Crystal). Those are bad names.

Read that again and saw that Hunter was a girl. Interestingly enough, I've known a Hunter my age that was a girl. I'm not big on the blatantly boy names on girls but it's still better than an illiterate spelling.

Christel is actually a legit spelling - it's German.

I can't stand the name Hunter, so I feel sorry for the poor kid. And Eboney is quite bad too. I don't mind Ebony, but that e makes me want to pronouce it e-BONE-e.

I like your daughter's name. I'm usually not a fan of names ending in a H (like Norah for example), but Lilah is very pretty.

The name Hunter is quite common on both genders, although it may be more popular in the southern US. Its no different from Thatcher, Sailor, Sawyer, etc.

The spelling of Eboney is pretty bad :/

I knew a blonde, blue-eyed girl named Ebony--and to my knowledge she was never made fun of for her name and it hasn't hindered her professionally either--shes a psychiatric nurse. Maybe her parents were just a fan of the tree?

The only girl I ever knew named Ebony was white. Maybe that's why I don't think it's weird, I don't know. I dislike the name, but I don't understand why only black people should use it. Is everyone named Ruby red? Is everyone named Rose pink? Is everyone named Violet purple? Are people named Ivy composed of creeping vines? Etc.

I also dislike the name Hunter, but it's fairly common.

There was an Ebony in my class in elementary school, and her younger brother was Ivory. Both were black, and I always found both names funny.

I don't see a problem with either name in terms of looks.
I know a red haired little girl named Ebony, while the name isn't my cup of tea there are many names that have meanings that may or may not work with how a person looks.

I hate the spelling of "Eboney" (should definitely get rid of the 'e') but it doesn't bother me that it's meaning is counter to her appearance. The meaning behind a name doesn't really mean much to me, at least in terms of it "matching" the person it's given to. Maybe this is because the meaning of my name is "Follower of God" and I'm actually agnostic! :)

Also, I really love the name Lilah. It's really beautiful, especially with the 'h' at the end.

I actually don't like Hunter on boys, I much prefer it on girls. So I don't think that she's unfortunate at all, I love it.

Eboney (not even spelled right, no less!) is really...awkward? on a pale white girl kid. I'm not sure that they knew what it meant.

Interesting.

About a year ago (maybe more, maybe a little less) I asked the question here if a white child named Ebony would be weird, or a black child named Lily. Pretty much everyone said no.

Eboney looks really ugly, though. And I hate the name Hunter, especially on girls!

I'm sure that's not the reason they went with that spelling. And it might be Cristel. I'll take a look at her name placard when I go in for a tour today.

first of all, love your daughter's name. we have the name lila on our list (spelled with no "h" as it is after my great aunt who spelled it sans "h").

I'd be interested to talk to these parents to see why they named their fair skinned child ebony Eboney. Of course, it'd be much more interesting if their older child was ivory Ivorey.

I don't mind the name Hunter, even on a girl, but I don't really have an issue with boys names used as girl names. My only issue with hunter is the popularity/trendy aspect of it, but meh.

I can't decide if I like Hunter for a girl...I have to say, I think I actually DO. It sounds tough and tomboyish, which I think is cool.

Lilah is very pretty.

Eboney does not need and should have that pointless "e" in there...and that little girl does sound as though she, unfortunately, has a very ironic name. :/ Hunh.

well girls with boy names detest you too.

Eboney is a little too--contrasting for me, and I'm not a fan of the spelling. I do like Lilah, though! Hunter is my guilty pleasure for boys.

Yeah, it's a tricky name...I'm surprised I like it at all, really, since I don't like huntING, lol.

That's certainly true - actually, it's probably more than likely it's true. I was just mentioning it. My great-aunt's name is Christel and her parents were German immigrants so... yeah. :)

Hunter on a girl always reminds me of the show Grosse Point.
I hate the name though, it sounds so violent...

When I taught middle school a couple years ago, I had (with eight classes) six Hunters and six Logans. Three of each were female and three were male. It was odd.
