Confusing

So, just out of curiosity, when you hear or see the name Rayne, what's your first thought: boy or girl?

So far half of my friends say BOY immediately, while the other half is convinced that it's a girl.

By sound, my dad, our friend, and I all think it sounds like a girl. Two of us say we could think the spelling was a boy (but could be a girl) and one says still girl.

Funny to hear that, since the half of my friends who said BOY said so because they thought it sounded like a boys name :P But they might be pronouncing it different, since we're all Dutch :)

Hehe. Yes, we're probably either pronouncing it differently or have different associations with the same sounds. I know some names sound really pretty to someone from one country and not to someone from another so maybe the sounds in Rayne sound more masculine to a Dutch person.

Are you saying it something like rye-nuh? I'm saying it the same as English rain--rayn.

I pronounce it like 'rain', but some of my friends say 'rain-uh'. Either way, I think the name is way too feminine to ever use on a boy :)

Funnily enough I think of girl but I have a character in a book I'm writing called Raine and he's a boy! I also think of the singer Raine Maida - who is also a boy, but on a general basis I think girl.

Hahaha! One of the main characters in my story for NaNoWriMo '06 was called Rayne and he was a boy as well ;-) This post wasn't because of the character, though, but the sister of a friend of one of my friends just had a child and called it Rayne. We don't know whether it's a girl or boy, so we were trying to guess. :P

Well, firstly I think of rain, as in a weather condition, and as such, don't think it should be used for a name on a person, unless one has that as a surname. But, to better answer your question, I think Rayne is more appropriate for a boy and Raynie (Ray-knee) for a girl.

I was going to say girl at first but I was pronouncing it wrong. to me it looks like Ray-nuh and to me that sounds like a girl. But if it's just Rain it's really hard to decide. for some reason this little hippie boy with long curly blond hair sticks out in my mind, ha!

Apparently the name is pronounced like 'rain' but spelled this way. I'd pronounce it 'rain-uh' if I hadn't known the 'correct' pronunciation.
