What do you all think of the name "Aster"? Does it sound male or female to you? Do you think it could be either? Other thoughts?

To me, it sounds like a last name. I think of the prominent Astor family, and John Jacob Astor and his wife Madeleine on the Titanic in 1912. If I had to choose, it would be a boy.

It's all right.

That is exactly what I thought.

At first glance it seemed like an odd misspelling of Ester. Aster would be masculine to me though. I don't like it.

its like a combo between astrid and esther. it sort of feels like you are pronouncing esther wrong.

It makes me think of crabs. :\ (The ones you find in water, not the ones you find on bodies.)

It reminds me of Astrid, so I'd say it sounds like a female name. I don't particularily care for it, though.

It sounds male to me, if anything, but when I said it aloud it sounded like Asda, the massive supermarket chain.

it sounds male to me, but could easily work for a female as well. i prefer it spelled astor though. i guess i have a weak spot for new york city. :)

I think I like it.
It would be good for a boy or a girl.
It reminds me a bit of "a star" which I like.

Female. Probably because it also reminds me of Esther.

Male. It would be a better MN.

It sounds male, if anything.
But it makes me think of castor, as in oil...

It sounds like a male name that could me made unisex. On a girl it could sound cool but on a guy it would be a little nerdy.

It sounded female to me, because I thought of the flower, and associate it with names like Daisy, Lily, etc.

Makes me think of Allister, a band
OR someone not annunciating [sp?] their words when saying "asked her"

I think Aster is an adorable name.
I would just worry about my kid getting made fun of in school. Kids can get quite creative when it comes to making fun of someones name. There are names I like but would never use for the sheer fact that they could easily get made fun of just for their name. I always try to take that into consideration when thinking of names for my future children. Haha.
