Tis the season...
Dec. 18th, 2008 12:34 pmMy friend just announced she is having a baby, and that she likes the name Ruby. I told her I thought the name Ruby June was really cute. She agreed, but said it wouldn't work because the baby will be born in July. I thought that was a little odd...
So, how much does the time of year affect the name of your baby? It "ok" to name a summer baby Noel and a winter baby Summer? Which name are more seasonally related that others? Like Holly vs. Iris? What about weather and time of day names like Misty, Dawn and Sunny?
Lastly, can you think of any boy's names that have this "issue"? Seems like most seasonal/desciptive names are female...

Date: 2008-12-18 09:13 pm (UTC)For a first name, for some names I think it does matter. It seems strange to name a kid Noel, Summer, or Autumn when the child is born during a different part of the year unless there are some other circumstances to explain using the name (maybe mom and dad first met in Autumn).
Names of plants (including Holly) or weather related names are fair game any time of year.
Boys names: I actually like the name Noel for a boys name, but pronounced NO-ul for a boy (rhymes with Joel). I'd use the christmasy no-EL pronunciation if it were a girls name, but would probrably spell it Noelle.
