[identity profile] lady-marmite.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
hey everyone! just joined. making a post :)

I'm not far enough along yet to know the sex of the baby *but I'm hoping for a boy, so that's been my main focus for names* but I've been thinking of names relating to books and art, like authors or characters from stories, and famous artists. Tesla also came up, lol.

but the only thing I end up coming back to is Machiaveli, which is the only thing me and my baby-daddy can agree on D:

any suggestions? I'd like to hear anyone's input :)

To me, Machiaveli is a bit much for a first name, so I'd suggest making it a middle name, instead.

Instead of Machiavelli, why don't you go with Niccolo?

for a girl, Artemisia after Artemisia Gentileschi?

Geoffrey for Chaucer? Personally a favorite for me =)

Emelye for a girl from Canterbury Tales (Knight's Tale if you want to get specific)

That sucks. I have synesthesia, but it's mild, and my name looks nice. Unfortunately it makes a lot of words look orange, which is my least favourite colour.

I think Machiaveli is a bit much. Actually, a lot much.

I vote for Niccolo instead, for sure. Or anything else, actually.

Machiavelli is a bit much but it is way cool. I've only read one of his works and wasn't really into it, but you can't deny that his last name is awesome. I think Mach (like the speed measurement!) would be such a cool nn too, except that it's a homophone with mock. Realistically, it is quite the name for a baby to carry. :\

I like Tesla, but I'm a fan of names that sound girly on boys. That one begs for teasing though because no kindergartener is going to know who Tesla was.

Other names: Rembrandt, Salvidor, Raphael, Peregrin, Benvolio, Caspian, Dorian, Heathcliff, Byron, Dacry, Duncan, Sawyer, Walden.
Some of them are still a little flowery(?), some are a bit toned down.

Machiavelli is totally badass, but for like a goldfish or a cat or something, it's too much for a kid. I second the suggestion of 'Niccolo'. Then it could still be the namesake, plus it's still uncommon, plus Niccolo is an awesome name, PLUS I love the nickname 'Nico'.

There is something hilarious and yet ool about the idea of a goldfish called Machiavelli.

Seriously.

The real problem with Niccolò, even in italian, is that it bears an "accent" on the final o. Annoying, I know. It's the only italian name that has that, except for Salomé.

i am not wild about machiavelli, to be honest, but i love the nicknames that come along with it.

mack or max are GREAT! if you call him mac or max, you can always keep machiavelli a well kept secret that it is indeed his full name.

ETA: welcome! :)

Machiavelli is no better than naming your son Bacardi, sorry.
It's still a last name and italians don't ever use last names as first names.

But if you are going to go through with it, please spell it correctly.

One of my cousins is named Tessa after a drawing from the 16th century, but I don't know which artist. Close to Tesla, which I also like.

It really depends which sort of art you're looking inspiration from.
A good ol' classic is Leonardo, after Da Vinci master.

OR a bit out there, Giotto (JAW-ttoe)

She's not Italian. She's not going for Italian naming styles.

Italian names? Yeah, totally. I just meant that you could go with an Italian last name if you were honoring someone that had that last name. You don't need to be so strict with Italian naming styles (e.g., the NO LAST NAME NAMES bit) if it's to honor someone.
