Man, I'm aware the children's mother is eyeing this post, so I'll try to be polite... but the userinfo does say to be honest. Both names encapsulate everything I find overly trendy, overly cutesy and lacking in substance.
Makenna... well, people wanted a girlier version of the megahit Mackenzie, I guess (or just a "unique" take on it?). My main problem with it is how hugely but briefly it seems to have spiked.
Mayden is one of the names this community threw around as a joke when we were all getting tired of the Taydens and Zaydens, etc. — but then like, "No, nobody actually would."
Still, if the parents are happy and the children grow up happy with their names, that's the most important thing, right?
It's ok. I don't mind that people dislike my girls names. It just means that it will be less people to use it for themselves. My husband does not like typical names like Jessica, Amber...ect. And I don't blame him, as I have a very typical name for where we live (Julie).
He was the one that chose Mayden while she was still in my stomach, and I didn't like it at first either lol. but nearing the end, it grew on me :D As for Makenna...I was goggling names, and found a web site with just Irish names, and looked through a few, picked 3 I liked and asked him to help me chose one, and we both agreed on Makenna. Although it was spelt McKenna. And that is too much like a last name.
[My husband does not like typical names like Jessica, Amber...ect.]
This I find odd, because the '-ayden' trend and Makenna are both very ordinary names, and have been for the past eight years. =\ I like Makenna. It's trendy, but it isn't a crazy kind of trendy. I see you live in Canada, which would make my post different, but are you aware of the '-ayden' trend, or any other name trends in general? The typical name has changed. Jessica and Ambers don't exist too much anymore; they're all in high school and college by now.
Yeah we're in Quebec, Canada. So there's not too many Ayden names. And I googled Makenna almost 3 years ago, and only found McKenna names as last names here. I didn't see the trend til I started on lj, about 2 1/2 years ago. Now I see Hayden, Aiden, Kaiden...ect. Too many lol. But I named Mayden almost 6 years ago, was not a online person. Which explains why I didn't see a trend way back then :P
Ohhh... I see! Okay, that makes me feel a bit better. My (then) five-year-old sister had three Jadens in her kindergarten class last year, so any -ayden name that isn't Aidan/Aiden is painful for me to see. XP At least you're in Canada, where there aren't so many of them.
Y'know, if it weren't spelled with a Y, I could get behind Mayden a little more. My initial reaction was "eeew," but the more I think on it the less I hate it. I wouldn't use it myself, however, and most definitely not how the mom paired it - Mayden Liegh. Sorry mom, since I know you're lurkin', but that's just a bit too far.
I am lukewarm on Makenna. Not terrible, not great. I prefer the spelling McKenna.
Haha. The story on the Liegh part was, we had 1 hour of sleep before the delivery, and when it came time to fill out the paper work, I told my husband I wanted LEIGH, but he was tired and mispelled it lol. It's not pronounced like that though. It's kind of like Mayden Lay. Weird I know. But I would have to pay $1000 to change it :S
Mmkay. It was really the sound that bothered me most - Maidenly? Word-names aren't a big peeve of mine, but pairing them with middle names to make descriptions (another example: Heaven Leigh -> heavenly) makes me go o_o.
Mayden? Ugh... will the "aidan" influence never cease? I swear, in ten years one of every four kids will either be named jayden, kaden, aidan, hayden... and now mayden?
No, really. But don't tell his/her illiterate parents. They'll be either devastated or comment on how creative they are to change the English language.
And it'd be sooo unfortunate if little Mayden is a boy. Hopefully no one around him reads Harlequin romances.
Mayden was not mispelled. I just thought it looked better that way, instead of everyone going "oh you like Iron Maiden too huh?" And Mayden is a girl. I think I would die laughing if I seen a boy named Mayden lol.
Well, it kinda is. :( If you name your child something that happens to be a noun or adjective - ivy, genesis, cadence, serenity - it's good to spell it right. The only exception I can think of is Blythe (adjective - blithe), where there are two legit spellings. I hate seeing Ivee, Jenesis, Kadence, Serenitee - spelling a noun name the wrong way is tacky, sorry to say. It's one reason why I hate the name Nevaeh.
But as long as you like it, right? Your daughter is adorable and most people even forget the word maiden, so it doesn't matter. And I really shouldn't talk, since my own (non-noun) middle name is a kre8tyve spelling of the traditional way.
It was my husband choice on Mayden. I had alot of names I wanted for her, like Hayleigh. But it was already my cousins' daughters name. So, we opted for something different. I actually love her name. It's so unusual. When people hear it, they always say "Oh that's a different name. How do you spell it?" lol. My husband is heavily into Iron Maiden as well. And after calling my belly Mayden for a few weeks, I fell in love lol.
Thanks. My daughter was asked a few times for modeling, but I want to wait until she is older.
It's funny, like I said in another comment- I've seen you in this community before so I've seen the name Mayden several times and NEVER made the connection to the word Maiden. I guess I'm dense, but I just saw it as an -ayden name.
