[identity profile] palepachyderm.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
just a few names i have been pondering:

girls:
tula
ruby
iris
ginevra
maya
amelia
melanie (this is boyfriend's fave, it might be growing on me)

all of the above would have my surname as the middle name.

boy:
charles (would be charlie)
oliver
william (would be will)
jackson

all of the above would have michael as the middle name

can't seem to think of more boy names that are sweet but not too "bronx mowgli"-ish.  i like classic names, especially for boys, but i don't want anything too stiff, you know? any thoughts?

I like:

Ruby
Iris
Ginevra
Amelia
Melanie

Oliver
William

How are you pronouncing Ginevra? It didn't occur to me that there might be multiple pronunciations, but we studied a book with a character named this in one of my classes, and half the class, including the prof, pronounced it differently than I do.

About half of them were saying it similarly to you, like Gin-EV-rah. I and the rest of the class said Gin-EVE-rah.

I didn't like Gin-EV-rah at first, although it is growing on me. I still like my way better though hehe.

Just to bring an example, it's Gee-NAY-vrah in italian.

Isn't it an Italian name originally? Would that make other pronunciations incorrect or regionalized?

I go back and forth between gin-EV-ruh and ginnuh-VRUH.

In this spelling, it is definitely a legit italian name.
And in this case there aren't any differences between regions, that can happen with other names (ie: Francesca is Frahn-ch-EH-scah in some places and Frahn-CHAY-scah in others, Stefano can be STEPH-ah-no or STAY-fah-no).

It's Gee-NAY-vrah up and down Italy! Not so much Gin-EV-rah, but I guess it's close enough.
The second prn you mention, on the other hand, doesn't exist :)

tula - i like it, would be a cute nickname for tallulah, which i love.
ruby - our number one girls name! love it!
iris - very pretty.
ginerva - i think its ugly, sorry.
maya - its fine. a little plain, but cute.
amelia - classic and beautiful!
melanie - dont like it at all.

and i love all of your boys names. oliver has been my number one boys name for years and years but the man doesnt like it, so its been nixed i guess.

i am not super wild about jackson, but i adore jack (thats my mans name) so i can deal with it.

oh too bad about ginevra! my boyfriend hates it too, and it's one of my favorites. i'll save it for a future cat or something.

tula is actually an archaeological site in mexico that i always thought was really pretty. it's my top name so far.

i'm not too wild about jackson either. again, it's the boyfriend's suggestion.

Tula reminds me of My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

My great grandmother who was born in the 1910's name was Iris.

Isn't Ginevra the full name of Ginny from Harry Potter? I don't think it comes out until book 7, so it might be too obscure a reference, but I wouldn't use it because of that...

I like
Iris
Maya
all your boy choices

I don't really have the same taste in names that you do at all. Just don't name your kid Jackson Michael... kids will tease him for it during first day of school roll call.

I was thinking the exact same thing about Jackson Michael. But then, I don't really care for either name in the first place.
