Nickname ideas
Nov. 23rd, 2008 03:12 amNot expecting nor TTC, but our settled name for a girl is Alma, meaning "apple" in hungarian. Long story, which many of you probably know by now.
We have thrown ideas around for a middle name, but I guess the right one will just pop up at the right time when needed.
What I keep wondering about is possible nicknames. So I'd like to know what are the most common (but most far-fetched are very welcome too) nicknames that come to your mind for Alma (prn. AHL-mah)? What's your first reaction?
My ideas will be in the answers, to avoid influencing yours.
Thank you all! :)

Date: 2008-11-23 02:17 am (UTC)But diminuitive forms are also quite common, so she sometimes could be adressed as Almina (Ahl-MEE-na), which practically would produce the nn Mina.
I like the sound, but Mina is a very famous retro italian singer (but not the charming type) and "mina" is also the word for "mine", as in bomb.
I'm looking for other options, but can't seem to find any.

Date: 2008-11-24 06:04 pm (UTC)There is a huge tendency to turn names into nicknames that always end in -y, so Almy is definitely a possibility! thank you for your input! :)

mammy
mamie ("may-mee")
And for those who will find out or know it means apple in hungarian, who knows, maybe someone will use 'blossom', as in apple blossom.

Date: 2008-11-24 05:59 pm (UTC)But I really appreciate your suggestion on Ollie, because "alma" in Hungarian is not exactly pronounced AHL-mah, but closer to Awl-maw, so the O sound in Ollie is actually more accurate :)
And I like Ollie lot better than Allie, so your comment was really helpful!
I can quite say it was THE nickname I was looking for but couldn't find!
