Not expecting nor TTC, but our settled name for a girl is Alma, meaning "apple" in hungarian. Long story, which many of you probably know by now.
We have thrown ideas around for a middle name, but I guess the right one will just pop up at the right time when needed.

What I keep wondering about is possible nicknames. So I'd like to know what are the most common (but most far-fetched are very welcome too) nicknames that come to your mind for Alma (prn. AHL-mah)? What's your first reaction?

My ideas will be in the answers, to avoid influencing yours.

Thank you all! :)

there was a crazy character on desperate housewives who was named alma..so i immediately thought of her. haha. but other than that, i always sort of saw it as an old lady-ish type name.

My neighbor's name is Alma, and though she's grown with a little one of her own, now, her parents still call her Almy. Which, I realize, isn't technically any shorter than Alma, but that's what they call her. :-)

I think possible nick names that some people might use are:

mama
mammy
mamie ("may-mee")

And for those who will find out or know it means apple in hungarian, who knows, maybe someone will use 'blossom', as in apple blossom.

The first thing that comes to mind, for me, is Ali

It's cute, but really it's so short that other than Allie/Ollie and maybe Mama, I can't think of anything. Do you know od Hungarian nicknames for it?

Glad you like it so much! :D After I wrote Allie I realized that Ollie was a lot more like the sound of 'Al' in Alma. You could even write it Ahllie, but that might be weird since the name doesn't have an H in it, and I think 'Ollie'. spelled that way is just cute. :)

Anyway.. yay!

I think Alma is short enough that it doesn't need a nickname, really....

But if I had to:
Ali/Allie/Ally
Mimi?

Even though it's not part of the sound, I immediately thought "May." If you're into masculine names on girls, just "Al" could work too.

Alma is a lovely name. :)
