Our new neighbors have 2 little girls. The 7 year old is Tiphany-they introduced her as "Tiffany, spelled with PH not F's."   And  the 4 year old was introduced as "Serendipity, like the movie."  It made me wonder if they ALWAYS introduce the kids this way.

Ok then.   I think it's a bit much but to each his own I suppose. WDYT?

They probably do, probably have to really as people will ask.

I always have to spell out and clarify my middle name [Clair]; and mention it's after my cousin. But that's not a bad thing, I like the name.

Regardless of what first name I used my kids will have to automatically spell out our last name, like every other generation of my paternal family do (it's phonetic and not that uncommon; people just don't pay attention). There are worse fates.

I don't even know what to say. I mean, A: I really hate the names. But B: the kids really don't need to be introduced that way. If people develop any kind of relationship, they'll discover the spelling later, and using the movie to introduce Serendipity? Because it was never a word before that or anything.

Serendipity is a but of a guilty pleasure name for me.
I know a Serendipity who goes by Wren.

Tiphany is absolutely terrible.

My name is the same as the town I live in. So when I introduce myself or somebody asks for my name, I always feel like I have to follow up with "like the town". Because they always have a stupid remark to it. It's my own defense because I was teased about it all through my years of school. It's not like it's a bad name either, I love my name.

I'm only saying this because they've probably got annoyed with people asking about the names so they just feel like they're obligated to say it.

At first glance, I read it as Timphany. I wonder if I'm not the only one.

My name is spelled somewhat kr8tively, but I never mention it when I introduce myself because it seems like the kr8tyv spellings are just as common as Carly. Sometimes when I was really little my relatives would introduce me as "Karlie with a K..." (but I would introduce myself by saying, "My name is Karlie and my favorite color is purple.")

Serena or Serenity wouldn't be so bad, but Serendipity just always sounded like a "dippy" name to me.

Boo to Tiphany as well

I think they do introduce their kids that way ;)

Years back I had a crush on a girl called Lyza, and since Lisa and Lyza are pronounced the exact same way here she also introduced herself as 'I'm Lyza, with 'YZ' not with 'IS'. It made sense!

Serendipity is a long name, by the way.

I think if you are constantly compelled to inform people of the spelling of your kids' names, you need to rethink it.

I chuckle at the pre-emptive explnation of names. I never explain my kids names straight out, but I have, when saying their full name [when they were born or if they were in trouble ;)], had to go into an indepth explnanation of the name enough times that I've thought about. I've basically cut it down to "No, he isn't named after the footballer he was named after my husband's childhood hero, That is his hebrew name [which is why it sounds odd], that is a traditional family name and I like it." as well as "Yes I know of her, but actually she was named after the last monarch and Queen of Judea who has nothing to do with that story."

If it's just a casual meeting, I don't see what the point is in introducing them that way. One of my class mates is Karli. I didn't know how to spell her name until two weeks ago because I never had a reason to spell her name. No harm. No foul. It just wasn't need to know information at that time.

I think if they're going to use those names they should at least be like "Tiphany as in epiphany" and "serendipity like the children's book about the little sea creature"
