[identity profile] cathkitten.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My cousin recently had a baby girl, and named her Moira. I think its a great name for a little girl today. It'll be cute at 7 and it will have gravitas and sound professional at 37. Refreshing in an era of Junipers, Rivers, and Kaydences, I think. ;)

Moira is the name of a family friend, and while it took a while to get used to, I really like it now.

I adore this name - it ages very well indeed, and it's still unusual.

I'd name my child River or Cadence over Moira any day... Juniper would be a tough call, though.

i always wondered...how do you pronounce it?

How do you pronounce it? I've met a Moira pronounced Moy-ra (which I don't like the sound of much, but it's good in the ways you said). But I realise that it's an Irish spelling which is pronounced some other way traditionally, so which pronunciation did she use?

I've always pronounced it as you did, that's how the girl in highschool pronounced it, and I've never met anyone else with the name :)

My friend pronounces it more-a. She says that the traditional irish pronunciation would be similar to moy-ra, but not exactly.

Hmm I prefer that sound, because I don't like the "oy" sound in Moira... anyway congrats to your friend :)

I personally love the name. I knew someone in highschool with that name. :) (the girl wasn't thrilled with the name unfortunatly.. )

Yay! I completely agree. What a breath of fresh air in this world of Madisons, Mackenzies and Kadences!!

I'm afraid that is one of the most repulsive names ever...
It's really ugly & not at all 'girly pretty'...

Okay.. More-uh is slightly better. I've always heard it as Moy-Ruh...

I like Moira. Juniper and River seem like silly names to pick on, though. They're both very rare!

Ryvir, maybe. ;)
