What are some names that you like but you wouldn't use because they have a stigma behind them, or give people the wrong impression about you/your kids?

The only one that comes to mind for me right now is Adolf. I really like the name, but the whole Hitler thing is a little too obvious, and I wouldn't want to make people think I was a Nazi.

It's a pity about the associations. even spelling it Adolph would still sound the same and not help. I used adolpha in a story once.

Adolf means noble wolf apparently.

I'd veto any name associated with a well known celebrity....so no Britneys or Mileys for example.

Ok I just have to add that I don't actually like the names Britney/Miley. However if I did like a name that could be unfortunately associated with someone famous....then I wouldn't use it.

Lolita, because of, well...yeah.

And Lola, because of the song by The Kinks. While I'm perfectly fine with my kid having any gender identity at all, I think it'd be kind of rough to get saddled with that when the junior high school kids heard the song from their parents (or, hell, grandparents).

Lucifer, for sure. Sounds great, nice meaning (light bearer) but oh, the connotations!

Christian...because I'm Jewish.

Evangeline is posing something of a problem - especially because I really like Christian, but that'd be one hell of a sibset.

I used to like Jordan on a girl, but a British glamour model kinda ruined it for me. Oh, and I really like Raphael, but I'm not sure there'll ever be a generation that doesn't think Turtle...

One a similar note, my parents were going to give my brother the middle name Josef, after my grandfather, but seeing as his first name is Che (after Guevara) they decided it might be just a bit too communist and rethought the spelling. It's Joseph now.

When I first started reading your sentence about Raphael, I thought you were going to say something about the painter or angel and thought to myself "But those aren't bad associations whatsoever!"

I'd use it.

See, those are the associations I have! And partly why I like it...I dunno. Mutant Turtles haven't quite knocked it off of the list, just bumped it down a few...

I love the name Jemima, but I've been told that in the US, it's apparently some kind of brand name. I didn't know that until I came here, though! It's too bad, I think it's a great name.

Yeah, Aunt Jemima is a kind of syrup.

Date: 2008-11-11 01:40 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] 0o-faerie.livejournal.com
Is it a super famous sort of syrup? I mean, will everyone immediately associate Jemima with Aunt Jemima? Because I think they will...=\

From: [identity profile] aaww-my-bees.livejournal.com
I immediately thought of Aunt Jemima. I don't think I've heard the name anywhere other than the product.

I heard it on a British show =). Too bad it's so well-known!

From: [identity profile] lind-saay.livejournal.com
Haha, most likely. It's one of the most commonly used name brands, I think. I can only think of one other off the top of my head (Mrs. Butterworths) but I don't even know if they make that anymore, actually.

Aw, too bad. I mean, it isn't one of my top names, but I do think it sounds really nice. Well...at least that's one name I can scratch off the list with first name options!

I don't think it'd be a problem unless you live in the US -- you don't, do you? If you don't, I'd say go ahead and use it.

No I don't...but I think I want to live there at some point in my life (either there or in the UK...I don't if they have the syrup there, too ;))

I think they might, sorry :(

I mean, I'm Canadian, and it was my first thought too! But .. it's not the WORST connotation to have. Aunt Jemima syrup is good! :P

From: [identity profile] bandnerd88.livejournal.com
It has less to do with the fact that it's a syrup and more to do with the fact that "Aunt Jemima" was kind of a racial stereotype of servile female blacks that started back in the 1800's. If you Wikipedia it it gives you some basic information. I think that's the aversion that people have to it, not so much that it's syrup.

My mom's best friend is named Adolf. It was funny at first, but I'm used to it now so I think of him when I think of the name.

I'd never name my son Jorma because it's a slang word in Finnish that means a dick. Every kid at school would tease him to death. It used to be quite popular, though, and there are a lot of people in their fourties called Jorma.

Judas. Definitely.
Um..Lucien too, just because of the similarity to Lucifer
Can't think of any others at the moment.

My daughter's name is Reagan. Everyone either thinks the president, or the girl from The Exorcist.

i love the name Kennedy..But if I have a Kennedy and a Reagan.. I know people would think I'm trying to be political, when in fact, I like the names!

Oh, and I like Marilyn. But most people would think Marilyn Manson instead of Monroe.

i definitely wouldn't.

Really? That's good. I was considering Marilyn for my daughter when I was pregnant and every single person I had asked thought it was after Manson.

hmm. that's odd. i think marilyn would've be fine.

I'm too much of a lover for former president last names. I considered Reagan Madison for a while during my first pregnancy. Then I was like... WAIT! I can't do that. lol.

I love Kennedy, Reagan, Clinton, Monroe, Lincoln, Jackson, Tyler, Harrison, Pierce.. oh goodness, I must stop.

What's your daughters middle name? =)

I love Camilla, but guess who everyone thinks of when they hear the name 'Camilla'? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camilla,_Duchess_of_Cornwall)

I don't mind her, and the association itself wouldn't stop me from using the name, it's just that everyone automatically thinks of her, and then in a few years when Charles becomes King, it'll probably be even worse.

Date: 2008-11-13 12:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] soulsplinter8.livejournal.com
I definitely didn't automatically think of her. I don't think people would outside of Britain. Although I am living in England now... ;o)

Jezebel. I love the sound, but I'm Christian and I have the feeling that at the very least I'd get a lot of funny looks from my family and people at my church....

Mariah. I taught at a preschool with the most beautiful and sweet little girl with that name that made me put it on my list. But I'd never use it because of Mariah Carey D:

I used to love Jordan, but every single Jordan I've ever met is a brat. I'm worried my kid would end up a brat too lol

Damien. Though I love the name, the association with The Omen is a bit too strong.
