I was walking to class today and on one of the office doors it said Phaedra something. I'm guessing it's pronounced FAY-druh but who knows. Has anyone ever heard this name before? I don't know if I like it or not...

It's a name from Greek mythology. I do kind of like the sound of it, but it doesn't have the most pleasant connotations, so I could never use it.

yup. it is a greek mythology character name (daughter of king minos if i'm not mistaken), but yeah, like all greek mythology it didn't end well for her. i don't like the connotation, but i LOVE the name otherwise. i also heard somewhere that it was the Greek version of Phoebe... i could be wrong though.

i've also seen it spelled: Phedre, with an accent on the first 'e'

I'm pretty sure Phoebe is already Greek ... one of the Titans or someone?

And Phedre is the French version of the name ... some French playwright wrote his version of the story of Phaedra and Hippolytus, and it's called this.

I have a cousin named Phaedra. Her mom told me she heard it in a movie, I forget which one though.

Check out the song "Some Velvet Morning" by Nancy Sinatra or the cover by Primal Scream.

This was the name of one of the people at my old leasing office (she looked to be late 20s-early 30s). She also pronounced it FAY-druh.

In italian it's spelled Fedra and prn FAY-drah, just like you say it.
Fedro, the masculine version, is more known in Italy because of the greek poet

Phaedra is a great name, but as others have said, the connotations...so I don't know that I would ever use it.

I knew someone who spelled it Phadra. I don't really like the name. Like others have said, it doesn't have a good connotation.

I love the sound of Phaedra, but I dislike how it's spelled. Any other spelling makes it seem too creative for me, though, so I don't think I'll ever use the name. As some others have pointed out already, it's indeed Greek.

I just think of Ephedra, the diet pill/supplement.

Yeah, not the greatest connotations. But I don't mind them, somehow. Phaedra is one of my FAVORITE names of all time. :o)

One of my other favorites is Ismene (pronounced iz-MAY-nee), but people always seem to boo it when I mention it...
