[identity profile] thunderofsins.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Hi, Just joined. I'm Jeni, my husband is Jason. We're TTC right now and we're looking at Riyana Jo for a girl and Elijah something for a boy.

Edit: I'd just like to throw out there...that while a lot of people here are posting with the "whats your opinion on..." or "what do you think of..." I didn't do that. I simply introduced myself and said what names my husband and I were thinking about. So if I seem overly defensive in my comments, its because I felt like I was being attacked and given advice and opinions that I did not ask for. And yes, I know that the rules say that whether you as for an opinion or not its an "open invitation" for them, but it still just threw me off.

Riyana reminds me of Ryvita... that low cal cracker type thing... all i ate for about 3 years so it doesnt do anything at all for me.
I've never liked the name Jo for a girl i'm afraid, although i do like one syllable middle names... My friends sister is called Sophie Jo which is kind of cute but a bit redneck maybe? lol, im english, i've watched too many cowboy movies.

Elijah is such a cute name, i like Elijah Sebastian.

I love Elijah :)

I personally don't think that Riyana is a 'formal sounding' name at all... I think it's a very trendy name. It's cool how you derived it from two friends names :D.

I like Elijah, wouldn't personally choose it but it's such a fresh name compared to all the over-used ones and i don't really like Riyana, just doesn't sound right.

Is that Rhianna, just spelled wrong? Elijah is cute. I have to say I'm not a fan of creative spellings, it never looks good.

I used to know a "Rhiannon". She wasn't a very nice person, so she ruined all names similar to Rhiannon for me.

I love Elijah, though :D

How exactly is it pronounced? The Rhiannon I knew was pronounced Ree-ann-in.

I love love love Elijah, but Riyana Jo is way too redneck/country for me.

Haha, that's true about Ryvita! The only way to make it palatable is to put butter on it which defeats the low-cal "goodness"!

I also like Elijah but then I'm a big fan of LOTR and the actor playing Frodo is Elijah Jordan (Wood) - not sure I like the two J sounds so close together.

I'd pronounce Riyana as Ree-ann-a not Rye-oh-na but maybe it sounds different with an American accent?

I like Elijah but it's not really my style.

I think the whole rednecked thing is just connected to the 'jo' ... but i guess it would sound like that used with any name...

I think you're going to end up with little Riyana having to tell everyone how to... 1)spell her name & 2)pronounce it. Phonetics wise is says ree-anna, possibly Ree-ahh-nuh at a push.. to me at least.

ahh... I was pronouncing it "Ree-awn-ah"...
It's pretty but like another person said, there's going to be a lot people either not knowing how to say it, spell it, or either... maybe it the 'y' was taken out it'd be easier to see the pronounciation you want... "Ryana", because the "Ri" screams "Ree" or "Rah"...

I like Elijah but I hate Riyana... it just looks like a bunch of letters thrown together.

Completely Agreed! I work around children every day (ages 4-10) many of whom have kreaytivv spellings and they are CONSTANTLY spelling it out. They sometimes get rude when asked to spell their names for people and it's like "Don't get rude with me, get rude with your parents who gave you that spelling."

(and I am speaking from experience on both counts...I had to spell "Annika" for everyone).

I think Ryanna would be a nicer spelling for the girl. I love the name Elijah.

lol yes, Joanna would be easier!
I do love the name Ana, but thats just even more confusing! 'Okay... i have a crazy spelling & pronunciation, plus i go by my middle name!' Personally, i would go for the middle name as a tribute to my loved ones.

Well it's completely up to you, and I like where the meaning is derived from... just be prepared to have her have to spell and pronounce it for just about everyone (which doesn't say much... my name is spelt in the simplest form, easy to pronounce and I still always have trouble)

Riyana looks SO awkward. Nobody will ever pronounce it right, it looks super trendy. I don't think the Jo sounds bad, though.

Elijah is okay.

Riyana Jo sounds like a hillbilly name, and I don't think anyone is going to pronounce it the way you want it pronounced. I know it's your baby, and your choice, but think about you child and that they're going to have to grow up with the name.

Elijah is a nice, classic name.

I went to school with a Rhyana (Ree-YAH-nah - I'm British :) ) and we were enemies for a while. I still like the name, but I prefer the original Welsh Rhiannon (ree-YAH-non). I don't really care for Jo after it.

I like Riyana Louise, or Riyana Elise.

:)
