Maggie...?

[identity profile] home-to-me.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I posted before, looking for ideas for my brother and his girlfriend (due in September, YAY!). They find out the sex in a little under a month. I'm hoping it's a girl. So is she.

Anyway, she likes the nn "Maggie." My real name is Margaret. My mother's name was Margaret. She doesn't like the name Margaret (can't say I am too big on it either. Heck, I don't even use it anymore except for legal purposes and stuff, but it'll be my first daughter's middle name. One day). Anyway, she doesn't want to use Margaret, but she likes Maggie (and, I agree with her, that Maggie doesn't sound like a full name). So, any thoughts on what Maggie could be a nickname for? She's tossing around "Magdalena" and "Magnolia." I think Magnolia is way fun, though probably only because I think "Steel Magnolias" is the best movie of all time, and it's part of my first real email address I had. Plus, my niece is Lily, so two flower names would be way too cute. But, no one else (including my brother, I think) likes it. *shrugs* Someone suggested Megan (didn't say what spelling, but I think that Meaghan is pretty. *shrugs again*). I have to pass along THAT idea to her.

Any thoughts on other names that could have Maggie as a nickname?

i dont know why i forgot about this but a friend of mine has alwasy said that when she has a daughter, she will name her Madison Grace and use the nn Maggie (it's a mix of the nicknames Maddi and Gracie) and I think that is cute! So maybe you sister could name the baby something like that...?

Margery? Probably too close to Margaret, I guess.

stuck Maggie and Margaret through behindthename.com and looked under related names...

i thought this one was nice?: Magali (http://www.behindthename.com/php/view.php?name=magali)

kinda... out there, but who knows? :)

also, has she looked for names with 'mag' sounds in the middle so a nn of Maggie could still apply?

i think magdalena is ok, but i prefer magdalene or magdala which are pretty similar. i've known a magen, similar to megan except pronounced "may" instead of "meg". the name maren is also cute, and maggie sorta could be derived from that... maybe. there's also magda and magna, but those sound a little old lady-ish to me.

i dunno, i kinda like magen. :)

I was thinking of using just "Maggie" as a middle name, sorta link to my grandad.

Maybe she could just use Maggie?

Hmm what about Marigold? You could probably find a lot of interesting spins on names too..I dunno like Magdalia etc.

I was going to say Megan or Meagan if she wanted there to be an A in there. I think Maggie would be an appropriate and cute nn for Megan, and she could go back to using Megan anytime she wanted, in high school or whatever.

Margarite (Mar-ga-reet)? I dunno if I'm spelling that right. I have to say I don't like Magnolia. Then again, I see nothing wrong with just Maggie. It's beautiful :)

OH make your brother like Magnolia, i think it's gorgeous! Lily & Magnolia/Maggie sound so gorgeous together.
This was a pointless post apart from that because i can't think of any other names, sorry! lol

i think maggie is a fine full name, although i do get that its more nickname sounding. but even maggie can be shortened to mag or meg, which is also a nn for margaret as im sure you know.

or how about mena margaret, and calling her maggie? (i absolutely love the name maggie by the way so im completely biased)

i just looked at some of the other comments, and marigold is sweet.

Madelyn popped into my head...doesn't start with Mag, but close enough, right? :) You don't really need a whole lot of justification for a nickname anyway.

My best friends baby cousin is named Magdalena, but is 100% of the time called Maggie.... I personally think that Magdalena is really pretty :)! BUT, I'm sure that she could find any name starting with "Ma" and use "Maggie" as a nn... it's not like there are any rules.
