[identity profile] smallandneedy.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
A few weeks back, my friends and I were out doing some shopping. One of my friends told me she had been visiting her friend who just had a baby boy. Apparently, this friend with the cute baby boy named him Howl.

HOWL!

I pretty much went "Ewwwww" and my friend said "I know right".

I can't remember what the middle name was, but it was prettier than Howl.

But if you haven't seen that movie, i guess it'd be a little bit weird.

Interesting, I've never heard of that being used as a name, closest I know of the Welsh name Hywel (which is pronounced Howell).

Yes, I've seen Howell in the US, spelled this way. It's not so bad if you spell it right.

Is it pronounced like the word Howl, or like How-ell?

Howell would be acceptable, Howl is the noise a wolf makes.

Let me introduce you to my children Woof and Meow. Lol.

You pronounce the two differently?

I pronounce the two differently. Howl, like "owl" with an h. And Howell, "how-ull."

Howl is a word, describing the sound an animal such as a wolf makes. It being used in a movie does NOT lend it enough credit to be used as a name on a child, no matter how great a movie might be.

Howell with a very slight difference in pronunciation, depending on the dialect of the person saying it, and last names should stay as last names.

Equally repulsive is the name Wolfgang! Which is essentially two words smashed together, neither of which even separately, are good choices for a name. Sadly, a friend of mine named her son Wolfgang, and called him Wolfie. I don't like to be overly critical, but I can't help but cringe at some names. =/

Howell I could live with. Not Howl. I agree with the slight difference in pronounciation. Howl is one syllable and Howell is two.
