my boyfriend knows i'm obsessed with names, so he sent me this really interesting new york times article about the most popular baby names in new york city. give it a read: http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/22/popular-new-york-baby-names-2007/
i really loved the article (esp since i live in new york, myself), but i was a little iffy about it. i sent him back this response (which i'll put under the cut). i'm sure some of you will disagree with me though. what do you think? do you think the article is accurate? skewed? let me know!
verrrrryy interesting. yeah, britney did help increase the popularity, but even by the time she named her son jayden in 2006, it was already an "old" name. all of the people who are interested in names were like, "oh. jayden? that's boring." plus it's become one of those trendy names that people are starting to hate (like aidan, madison, etc). also, her spelling it with a 'y' wasn't innovative in my opinion. but whatever.
i'm very skeptical about some of those names on the charts at the bottom though. tiffany is #4 for asian baby girls? i highly, highly doubt that. i haven't heard of a girl being named tiffany (let alone an asian one) in forever. the youngest tiffany i can think of is donald trump's daughter who must be something like 12 by now. it was a huge name in the 80's and that was it. like heather and stephanie, it's still sort of around, but it definitely screams 80's. chaya as #9 for white baby girls? no fucking way. even the americanized version (kaya/kaia) isn't very popular. also, while esther IS getting more popular, there is absolutely no way that it's #7. it's more of an old fashioned name and people are JUST starting to get back into old fashioned names. in the 80's and 90's it was jennifer, jessica, kelly, melanie, etc. now more people are naming their kids things like eleanor and audrey. this was interesting, but i'm doubtful with the results..

Date: 2008-10-23 06:25 pm (UTC)My fiance's daughter is named Jaedyn [not his choice, it was his ex-wife's choice] which I don't really care for. Maybe if it was spelled Jayden I would feel better about it but I am pretty sure I just dislike the name in general and certainly not for a girl.
