Unusual name

So Janice Dickenson has her own tv show about her modeling agency.  I caught some of it last night. Apparently one of her models, from Sudan, Africa, is named Nyabel. Pronounced "KNEE-uh-bell".

WDYT?

I've never liked Isabel, because to me it's just like saying "is a bell", so that bugs me. But I think the 'bel' part at the end makes for a cute nick name. Nyabel might be an alternative more to my liking. But then I'm thinking it sounds similar to "need a bell".  Maybe I'm
being too fussy? =/

It looks like it should be Nye-uh-bel, but that's with english eyes. I actually like the KNEE-uh-bell pronunciation less than the Nye one for a similar reason to your disliking Isabel. It sounds like "knee a bell" and I picture someone ramming their knee into a bell. :\

LOL I didn't think of that, kneeing a bell.

And you know, after I heard Nyabel I thought how similar it is to the name Nayeli, which I like, and I don't know if I'm pronouncing Nayeli wrong (I prn. it "Nye-uh-lee")and I thought what if it was "Nye-uh-bel" instead, and I think I like it better.

I think it's a nice name, on someone who was born in Africa or whose parents are from that culture.

Otherwise, I have issues with people using names from cultures that are obviously not their own (ie, someone who is obviously Irish using a name from an African culture, or Indian, or something). It just seems . . . tacky.

However, I'm sure there are many people who will disagree with me.

I can see your point and to some extent, with some names, I personally can't see certain names that have a particular ethnic origin, being used on a different one. But I think names are relative and a matter of personal preference. Alot of names parents love, their children end up hating, even for 'normal' names.

Imagine if we were just given blank birth certificates and just got called "order of birth" son/daughter of Mr.&Mrs."Lastname", so that when we got older we could just choose our own name.

If you like the bell part, why not Annabelle or Mirabelle?

Oh I do like Annabelle and Mirabelle, though I prefer the spelling 'Mirabel', but that's mainly because I prefer names with no letters repeating.
Anyway, it's not that I was looking for a name I could get the nn 'Belle', I'm just really into names, especially unusual ones, and was comparing Nyabel to Isabel because I really dislike Isabel (a name with 'bel') and thought how Nyabel might be another, better alternative. I hope that all made sense lol. :)

it's okay. i've never heard it before. honestly though, i'd probably pronounce it ny-uh-bell or nyuh-bell. :x
