do spellings ever affect how you feel about a name? i'm not talking about hideous ~unique~ spelling like alyzabith. i mean legitimate alternative spellings.

for example:
i like lia, but not leah
elinor, but not eleanor
sean, but not shawn/shaun
i like cate and kate, but much prefer cate.

We're like opposites, lol.

I think Leah's okay, don't like Lia.
Eleanor reminds me of an old lady, Elinor looks like someone couldn't spell.
I can't stand Sean, and prefer Shawn.
Love Kate, don't like Cate.

I like Mai, but not May.

I was actually thinking about this the other night, it doesn't make sense not to like a name because the spelling is different, but it just gives it a different feeling.

There are some spellings that I prefer over others:

Shawn over Sean
Katelynn over Caitlin/Kaitlin
Sarah over Sara
Zack for Zach

I pretty much like y's over i's in names (within in reason)

Love Stacy, hate Staci or Stacey.
Love Haley, hate Hailey.
Love Kaley, like Kaylee, hate all other spellings.

Ditto, we're opposites. :)

I love Leah, Lia annoys me and reminds me of cars. Eleanor reminds me of the first lady, Elinor looks like it is trying way too hard to be trendy or minimalist.

I much prefer the spelling Mathilde, but Mathilda is ok. Matilda just bugs me a bit. Ditto with Margot. Margot and even Margaux are lovely, but Margo just looks incomplete and blah.
Oh, and I absolutely adore the name Anne, but just Ann is awful.

I prefer Matthew over Mathew, and Nicholas over Nicolas (and especially Nikolas!).

And in general, I tend to hate all spellings that just try to stick in extra letters for coolness. Like Madisynn. ;)

Jacqueline to Jaclyn and Jacqui to Jackie
Rachael to Rachel
Juliette to Juliet
Leslie to Lesley

Sort of, we pronounce them similarly. FH has family in the UK and we live in the northeastern US. We say Mathilde with a much softer a sound, not the hard mat-til-DUH or t-EELD. Kind of somewhere in the middle. I think Mathilde is one of the few names that I prefer the spelling because it affects the pronunciation, and just plain Matilda always sounded a little harsh to me. If that makes sense. :)

I know, it's such a pretty name. I had a friend named Lesley in high school and it got me into the name. but Leslie just looks so much prettier.

Definitely- I just prefer the look of some spellings over others, provided they aren't hideous unique spellings.

I'm trying to think of any spellings that I absolutely HATE of any name, but I'm kind of drawing a blank.

I actually prefer Elinor over Eleanor
Katharine over Catherine/Katherine
Leigh over Lee
etc.

I definitely prefer the way some spellings look but not necessarily the practicality of the spelling. I really love the way Laelah looks spelt although I think that would be rather frustrating for the poor dear having to explain again and again.

My daughters name is Priya which is how it should traditionally (in Sanskrit) be spelt. I much prefer this spelling to 'Pria' which is how everyone thinks it should be spelt. Now I have the problem though with people pronouncing it "Pryer" (like a boys name) when it should be said "Pri-aaah" (as in Leah).

Me too. My brother is a Zack and I was surprised to find out he said he was the only he knew who spelled it that way.

I think the OP was talking about legit spellings... of which Katelynn and Kaitlin definitely aren't. Caitlin is the only true American spelling of the Irish name... and I suppose Katelynn would be legit if it were Kate Lynn.

I hated the name Katherine until I saw it spelt Catharine. And now I love it! I think the 'C' and the two 'a's make it softer and more feminine, and that appeals to me.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I have preferred spellings for most names, but there are some I like equally, like Chelsea/Chelsey (well, I prefer Chelsea, but like both), Katherine/Katharine or Hanna/Hannah. And I like a lot of different spellings of Emily, including the brainbreaking "Emmaleigh" and "Emmalee," which I'd never use, but I like it anyway :)

I love Allison, but dislike Alison. I like Sarah, but not Sara.

I like Catharine, but no other versions of that name.
Zac over Zach/Zack.
Jon over John.
Sebastien over Sebastian.
Rhys over Reese/Reece
Sean over Shawn.
Juliette over Juliet.
Elinor over Eleanor.
Beau over Bo. So, so much.

Spellings absolutely make or break an name for me. I usually only like one spelling and wouldn't ever spell the name another way.

I want to call my second daughter Emilie but I hate Emily. I love Cate but hate Kate, Johanna but hate Joanna, Meghan but hate Megan. I could go on forever!

I really think it shouldn't matter how a name is spelled, within reason of course, as long as it's phonetically agreeable, then I think so what. There are so many languages, and they have been and always will be, ever changing. As far as names for people. They weren't all invented in one day, nor one year, nor one century. It's been a continual process that's involved using words used to communicate, such as Piper, Forest, Faith, Hope, etc. Then there's whole names derived from two names meshed together. And no matter the time, and despite the lack of regard by some people, there always has been, and always will be, new names, created from either old techniques of meshing already existing words together, or, there will be an assembling of new names from new combinations of letters. I don't think a name is invalid just because some people don't want to recognize it as such.

We're all individuals, with our own individual tastes. Not everyone is going to agree on the same names, nor the same spellings where names are concerned. Each person will have their preferences, so to each their own I say.

I definitely feel differently about a name depending on its spelling, although it's usually not so much in determining whether I like the name or not.

I do have my preferred spellings, but for me it's mostly about feeling like a name sounds different in my head if it's spelled Katherine or Catherine. It obviously doesn't, but it *feels* different. I also feel like the kind of person I picture when I think of Lia looks and sounds and has a different personality from someone spelled Leah.

In the case of Sean, I do really dislike Shawn, but that's just because of someone I knew and disliked when I was younger.

Selene, but not Celine.
Sofia, but not Sophia.

...I'm sure I'll think of more later on!

Shawn. That's the only spelling I like. Shaun, I'm on the fence about...used to like, don't so much now...and Sean I really, really dislike.

Katherine leaves me cold, but Catherine is one of my top names.

I think spelling makes all the difference. I used to hate the name 'Katelyn' until I saw it spelled 'Caitlin,' and now I love it! I prefer:
Emily over Emilie
Sebastien over Sebastian
Madeline over Madelyn.
Nora over Norah.
Sarah over Sara.
Carey over Carrie/Kerry/Kerri.
Sean over Shawn.
Caitlin over Katelyn.
Leigh over Lee.
Leslie over Lesley.
Haley over Hailey.

Isobel to Isabel.
Sean to Shawn/Shaun.
Sarah to Sara.
