I like the name James more than Calum, but I think Calum would be a better choice if you like it just as much as James, because it is much less common.

For your girls names...
Iona is the name of an all-boys school near where I live, and I can't shake the association to think of it as a girl's name.
Islay looks like a sentence: "I slay Claire"... it might not be pronounced that way, but it's how it looks when written down. And since Claire is my name, and I would rather not be slain, I do not find it appealing.
I have never heard of Tiree, where did you come across it? I'm not sure what I think of it yet since it might grow on me.
I think Rose is a lovely name, although not sure about having a one-syllable middle name with it.

Islay is pronouned eye-la. Thankfully noone i know has found a problem pronouncing it, maybe because it is a scottish word.
Tiree is a island off the coast of Scotland as are Islay & Iona.

Calum James - Love it, but i'd spell it Callum.
James Thomas- I hate the name Thomas, but James is fine.

Iona Margaret- I do like Iona.. I hope your surname isnt a word... because Iona is awfully like 'I own a'- i know an Iona Butt... her parents are evil! Hate Margaret
Islay Claire- Islay.. hmm no, a little weird for me.
Tiree Claire- Hate Tiree
Rose Claire- Rose is lovely but i htink of it as more of a middle name. I've never liked Claire..

Iona Margaret- I've never heard Iona before, but i guess it could grow on me. I really don't like Margaret
Islay Claire- This is kinda pretty, i don't like Claire though.
Tiree Claire- Really don't like this
Rose Claire- Rose is pretty but i prefer Rosa, Rosa sounds better with Claire because it has 2 syllables as opposed to Rose

So out of the girl names i'd chose Islay or Rose/Rosa.

I prefer Callum better than Calum...because Calum sorta looks like the word "clumsy" to me. Heh.

I like them both, they flow nicely and are great names, but i think i prefre Callum James just slightly - I hate the nn Jamie for a boy and i feel like it always happens with a boy named James.

I really like James Thomas. Callum sounds made up and looks wishy washy next to such a strong name as James.

I like Rose Claire and none of the others. I don't know if Rose goes with a one-syllable middle name so well. I like Claire Rose goes better. What about Margaret Claire or Margaret Rose? Or even Rose Margaret.

I really like Calum James.

I love all the girl names. Claire is a big favourite of mine. I would spell Islay as Isla as even in Scotland I think it might be confusing, especially for little ones at school. I like Tiree very much, it would be very unusual.
