Nicknames

Are there any nicknames for Søren or Julius? Do they even need nicknames--they're not really long names, right? FYI, our last name is Walker, so Jay is not a good nickname for Julius because then he'd be a jaywalker. Their full names would be Julius Hayek Walker and Søren Lysander Walker. The names are not up for debate; my husband insists on the middle names and these were the only first names we could both agree on. Also, I dislike the nickname Sandy for a boy (if you were going to use the middle name Lysander).

I kind of like Lee and Ren. Although Lee reminds me of Lee from Battlestar Galactica, and that character irritates me to no end, but maybe the association will have worn off by the time I have my kids. :>

I have an auto-immune illness which is more likely to be passed on to girls, so even though I'd like to have a daughter, we are going to do in vitro to ensure that we only have boys. If I had a girl, I would name her Anneka Maye (Maye is a family name that is passed down to the first daughter in each generation of my husband's family).

Yeah, if you do in vitro you can select for gender, but you have to have some legitimate reason for doing so:

I'll probably be close to 35. I'm currently in a Ph.D. program and will finish when I'm around 32, and then I have to do a post-doc, which will probably take at least 2 years, and I will probably have my kid (or kids if they are twins--there is a higher chance of that with in vitro, which is why we came up with two names) during the second year of my post-doc. I plan on being a professor, so the kid/s need to be out of infancy before the 7 crazy years of tenure evaluation begin. 33-34 is too close to 35 for me. Plus, you can have a baby with Down's syndrome at any age, and at least you can test for those kinds of things with in vitro rather than finding out during prenatal testing when you are already attached to your baby.

I hope to the nonexistent gods that I don't get pregnant naturally--I don't think I could stomach having an abortion and it would be impossible to go to grad school full time with a baby. It would pretty much ruin my career. We use birth control and condoms and I'm 100% adherent to my birth control schedule, so the likelihood of it happening is very low.

Yeah, I re-did my post--I didn't mean ultrasound, I meant the general prenatal testing. Either way, there's already an implanted embryo. I'm mostly concerned about my autoimmune disorder, which you can't test for prenatally, but you can pretty much eliminate the risk by not having a girl.

You can't get pregnant naturally if you don't have sex while you're doing the cycles of IVF. It will suck for us, but it does solve the potential problem. :/

I hope you don't mind me asking, but how is it more likely to be given to girls? I'm doing first year or biomedical science at the moment, and we learned that sex-linked disorders from the X chromosome are more likely to affect boys, due to the fact that boys only have one them. Unless the father is also a carrier, girls have a lesser chance of getting them.

I'm just curious :) I think this stuff is interesting.

julius could be jules or jude. can't think of any for soren. why not call them...julius and soren..?

They don't need nicknames. There is nothing you could get from Søren and Julius that would sound any better or be any shorter/easier to say. I think that just calling them Søren and Julius is great. But the entire topic of nicknames is a pet peeve of mine to begin with.

I don't think they NEED nicknames, but Julius can be Jules or Jude to me. And I quite like Sol (pronounced like Saul) for Soren.

What about Ori (prn. "oar-ee") from the oren of Soren, and Uli (prn "ooh-lee") from the uli of Julius? Also Jes or Jus from the J of Julius and the "es/us" sound at the end of it? Otherwise my favorite so far that's been suggested to you is Ren, and Lee.
