What do you think of Quimby as a girl's name?

A boy's name?

Disclaimer: I have no plans to use this name you do not need to say "Don't. Just don't". (see Islington post) I simply want to know opinions regarding the name.

I think it's cute. Reminds me of Ramona Quimby:)

I think I saw a girl named Quimby on Yo Gabba Gabba today.

It makes me think of the mayor on The Simpson's.

It kind of makes me think of Gumby, but I love the idea of Q names so depending on the middle name and if it works or not, I might like it.

It makes me think of the book Ramona Quimby, Age 8. I'm not really a fan of it as a first name though. Especially a girl's.

Mayor Quimby from The Simpson's...

Do not like.

[identity profile] mairelys.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, reminds me of The Simpsons.

I knew someone must've beat me to saying it, but that's definitely the immediate reference I see.

[identity profile] peaceowl.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
not a fan, for either gender.

[identity profile] solagirl.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Seems like a boys name to me.

[identity profile] ifancylust.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
i've never even heard of it. it reminds me of quinby, which reminds me of the ramona quinby books.

oops. it's been over a decade!

[identity profile] giveitfullheart.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Mayor!

I don't like it for either but I don't really like Q names much.

[identity profile] crzydimond.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
As a Simpsons fan I just think of Mayor Quimby.

[identity profile] sophie-louise89.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
agreed. In my opinion it's too masculine for a girl, But I guess i've met a couple of little girls named 'Billie' and the name suits them perfectly so people could get used to it.

I don't HATE it. If I met someone who named their kid that I'd just be like "huh, that's different." I wouldn't use it or anything, but I definitely don't think it's the worse thing someone could do to their kid. I see it more on a male than a female. Though really, I can picture it on a big golden retriever for some reason, lol.

[identity profile] home-to-me.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! A border collie would work too! One of those large dogs longish-haired dogs. Maybe an Aussie. lol.

It's an interesting name, and I kind of like the sound of it, but definitely not as a girl's name. It's too ... heavy on a girl, if that makes sense. I'm not even sure that I like it on a boy, actually. I like it as a surname hehe.

[identity profile] waitingonsunday.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
My first thought was, "Say it! Say, 'chowda'!'"

But all that aside, it's an interesting idea, as is Islington. I can't actually imagine either name on a person, and I might raise an internal eyebrow if introduced to a person with either name, but I wouldn't be repulsed.

Forgot to answer part of the question. I find Quimby somewhat feminine, but still think it would work better on a boy.

[identity profile] as-she-melts.livejournal.com 2008-10-10 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I lol'd and lol'd at this. I LOVE that episode.

"Come back here! I'm not through demeaning you."

[identity profile] emilybrianne.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's why my immediate thought was no...

From the Urban Dictionary:

Quim: The noun quim was a Victorian-era word that was used specifically to refer to the fluids produced by the vagina, specifically during orgasm. In modern usage it is primarily heard in British slang and is a derogatory or vulgar term for the vagina itself. The word is rarely used today in English slang but used in Wales as an insult rather than the above meaning. The word may be related to Welsh 'cwm' meaning 'hollow' or 'valley'.

Yikes.

[identity profile] th3-unicorn.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)
ohh that's cool!!

The only reference I was able to make was to Mayor Quimby in The Simpsons.

[identity profile] laminy.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Diamond Joe Quimby. It's just not an actual name to me, I cannot picture anybody with it. Especially not a girl. Plus, I'm not a fan of Q names.

[identity profile] 0o-faerie.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not a fan, but that has mostly to do with the fact that I don't like names that end in -by (such as Shelby, Trilby, Darby), so I don't like Quimby either.

[identity profile] sandtree.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds silly, even on a kid, and I definitely can't imagine 'Quimby' fitting a grown woman or man.

[identity profile] ex-londonso.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like it because I immediately thought of 'quim', which in the UK often refers to someone's vagina.

[identity profile] searlait.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I could see myself naming one of my toddler Sims Quimby.

[identity profile] searlait.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Female, I forgot to add.
