I am friends with a Jeremie, and I also know a Justyn (no, this is not a sibset). Both of whom are around twenty, so they're not new trendy spellings. So community, I want to know which you think is worse: the unneeded, randomly thrown in Y, which is obviously growing in popularity, or the replacing of a perfectly good Y with an IE?

Does your opinion change based on whether it's a boy or girl with the new spelling? In these cases, I think both of the spellings make the names look like they're supposed to be some trendy form of feminizing the name, but they are both boys. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with just plain ole Jeremy and Justin.

I think Justyn is appalling, it has just ruined the name for me. Jeremie is a bit queer actually. It doesn't seem to read right for me any more.

I can't decide, they're both as bad as the other.

I think the y is far worse. I had gotten a comment a while back on why I chose the "trendy" spelling for my daughter's name, Emilie. Truth is, the "ie" is the French spelling...and was the reason we picked it...to honor French heritage. :)

I'm with you...I like Jeremy or Justin better, too!

Justyn is far worse because it has no excuses. At least Jeremie is the legitimate french spelling.

I don't really like either spelling, but I do know a few Jeremie's. I have never met a Justyn though. That seems...I don't know, I don't like it. I dislike misplaced Y's.

The random Y is definitely worse.

This is coming from a Krissie though, but I went with -ie because Krissy looks too much like Kissy.

Wow, Jeremie is atrocious. I knew a Justyn, terrible spelling for a name I love :(

I laughed at that, lol.

Personally, I think the random 'y' is worse. The 'ie' can make it look more feminine but at least it looks like it could possibly belong. I mean, don't expect me to defend Zacharie or Weslie or anything but Austyn and Reygan are just horrible. Look a that little thing sticking out of those poor names.

the 'ie' looks french to me so it appeals quite a bit more than a random 'y' or an excessive amount. At least you can still determine Jeremie =Jeremy. Justyn could = Justin or maybe a girl Justyn a 'trendy' alternative for Justine...

any way you look at it the y is worse!

I agree, they both do look more feminine!

They're both horrible, and equally so. It looks unprofessional, especially since they are obviously already in the work force or at least in college. The names look like they belong on somebody under five, not someone emerging into the adult world. How depressing. Even if the alternate spelling is legit (as in another language, for example) and completely excusable on a valid reason, I wouldn't go for it if it isn't a mainstream/common/fairly well-known spelling.

It really depends on the name. I would think Jaidynn is a girl before Jaden is, even though they're a same name. Charlie is clearly unisex, so who knows? Alys is the Welsh form of Alice, but in the USA it'd make the parents seem illegitimate, IMO.
