Wow, I've never heard this used as a name before. It's actually the second half of the town I grew up in, so to hear it as a name is just really, really odd to me. Just my experience, of course :)
It seems like way too much of a mouthful for a girl or a boy. And if you didn't want her to be called Izzy what would you call her? Because, seriously, she'd need some sort of nickname. A lot of people would have trouble with that one.
Well, I'd be apt to pronounce it AYE-ling-ton and would just call her Isla. Hell, I'd just name her Isla in the first place. Islington sounds like a really clumsy place name for a human.
I used to work on Islington Street and liked saying the word when I gave the address. I've always wondered if it would work as a name. I think it sounds pretty out loud. I have no plans naming my future daughter Islington, though.
I really can't think of any other nn than Izzy...as for the name itself, I can't say i am a fan. I have to agree with all the previous posts...the name sounds like a place...not a person.
Islington is not exactly the nicest part of London and it conjures up images of a grimy tube station, cold streets, that vegetarian 3 pounds all you can eat place, teenage violence, design shops, etc. Please don't. Anyone she meets who'll have been to London (so most Europeans and many Americans) will probably have this in mind immediately.
