Big fan of Supernatural, just recently started with my DVDs from the beginning again.

WDYT of Sam and Dean?
Does Sam need a given name, or is it fine on its own?

Sam on it's own is becoming more popular.

I love both names.

Sam needs to be short for something -- it's too ambiguous as a name on its own. I mean, it could be male OR female, which is confusing, and I think when people read it they automatically assume it's short for something which could cause problems on resumes/job applications which you're supposed to fill out with your full legal name (they might be like, wtf? Can't follow directions?)

I like Samuel as a full name for Sam, but Samson would be okay, too.

on another note, I wasn't aware there were other SPN fans in this community! :)

I like them. My boyfriend even suggested them as possible future baby names (we were going through TV and movies for inspiration) but unfortunately, we knew some guy called Dean who was an absolute prick, so there's no way I want to name my kid that. I like Sam, but I agree with the other person who said it needs to be short for something. It seems incomplete on its own, but I don't like any of the longer forms that I can think of :/

Dean is actually on my list-- it's my paternal grandfather's and my youngest brother's middle name.

Sam is okay, but I do like it better since I started watching SPN. I think it's fine without being an abbr of anything, for the most part.

Love Dean!! Love it. I've adored it forever.

Sam? Eh...hit or miss. I agree with above that just "Sam" could be a girl or boy's name, so I like it as a nn (for Samson or Samuel) that he just goes by all the time.

I like both names, but I like Sam just a little better.

I personally like Sam as a name on its own, but then again, it is common here (The Netherlands). It might be more confusing if you're living in a country like the US, where Sam will be considered a nickname by most people.

I personally prefer Sam as short for something on a girl, such as:
Samara
Samia
Samantha
Samira
Samuela

Dean is okay (too short for my tastes), much prefer Sam.

They're two of my favourite names; Sam, just because I like it, Dean because I like it and it's really important to me. Lots of people are going to tell you that Sam needs to be Samuel, but I say screw it. If you like Sam and are going to call him Sam, name him Sam. Sam is on my list, Samuel isn't.

Supernatural confuses me so, because I'm used to Jared Padalecki being Dean on Gilmore Girls and in Supernatural his BROTHER is Dean and he's Sam. That's not nice.
