i have been around here long enough that i think i probably already know the answer to this, but i am asking anyway, hopeful. what do you guys think of the name indie for a girl? how about as a nickname? if so, for what? i dont like indira and thats all i am really thinking of.

i do like the name indiana, i have to admit. i wish i had some kind of connection to the state so i would have an excuse to use it.

we have already decided to name our next dog indiana, but i really love indie on a little girl, so i am kind of backtracking. (as a sidenote, we are both fans of indiana jones, not HUGE fans or anything so its not like we would be naming her after the character, but the connection isnt a negative one, in our opinion) and i dont think india would work because we are bound to have a little red haired girl and i just cant see a fair skinned, green eyed india.

whaddayathink?

What about Ingrid? I know nns for it were running around the other day.

I'm in the "cute as a nn, but not as a given name" camp. And Indiana is too much with the Jones-meets-Dakota to me.

Indie's a cool nickname. I like the name Indira, so I don't think I'm much help. I'm not a fan of Indiana.

I love the name India! I wish I could use it, but I don't think it would suit a lily-white child much. :p

What about Indra? Anything with -ind would work (Rosalind, Rosalinda, etc.).

I agree with the above poster about Indie. Certainly cute as a nickname, but not a given name.

I loooooooove Indie as a nn but am not fond of Indiana at all (I live right off a road named Indiana. Noooot a baby name to me).

India could work, and I like [livejournal.com profile] schexyschteve's suggestions with Rosalinda etc and having Indie be a nn fore those.

(Be careful, I may just have to steal this now :P)

Indie's pretty cute. It reminds me so much of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom though... when the little kid kept calling him Indie.

For full names what about...
Indah? Indigo?

I love Indie. I knew an Indy once. She seemed to be functioning fine. And it wasn't a nickname, Indy was her name.

Indiana is a bit much. If you like Indie, stick with Indie.

How about Melinda?

I love Indie - my friends have a niece whose name is Indiana, Indie for short. It's so cute, and suits her.

i LOVE indie as a name or a nn!!!

if you only want it as a nn, how about India?

Indi (with no 'e') is very cute as a nn... I also adore it.
I think I prefer Indigo as the full version. I have also seen India and Indiana (although her nn was Anna)

I quite like Indie, actually, especially as a nickname for India...but then again, if you have no connection to India, you might as well use Indiana ;)

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] babyjess8, I like Indigo as well. Or maybe Indira?

I don't see how they are connected?

I googled her, and know I know who she is. And I'm pretty into politics!

When I think Gandhi, I think Mahatma.

I can see now why you'd find it pretentious though.

I love Indie too!
I like it short for India, Indigo, Indra, and especially Indah which means beautiful in Indonesian.

My advice is just to use Indie as a name.

When I think of little girls named India, my mind first goes to India Wilkes from Gone With the Wind, who was fair haired and skinned, so I don't think it'd be that weird.

That's what I think of too.
I think India is the best bet for using Indie as a nickname. I agree it's not serious enough to be a stand alone name.

I think of the same thing

I know a little girl named Indie and, like most names, it was strange for a moment but now I'm used to it and don't think anything of it.

I actually think that's really pretty :)
