Bilal may not sound so nice, but it's a really special name if the family is Muslim (I'm assuming they are?). Bilal was an Ethiopian slave, who was one of the first freed in Islam (which condemns slavery). He was one of the favourite companions of the Prophet and was chosen to make the first ever call to prayer, the adhan (the sound that you hear in Muslim countries coming from mosques) because of his especially beautiful voice. The reasoning behind this was that, when trying to choose something to call Muslims to prayer, the human voice was selected because it was the instrument that God found most beautiful to hear. He's really important to Muslims because he is a symbol of racial equality.

So that kid has an illustrious history behind his name :)
