[identity profile] mscac.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I found this site like 9 months ago and wished I had seen it when I was pregnant with my daughter. I found out I was pregnant again around month 5 and am due september 27th... but 2 weeks ago i was dilated 4 cm so it may be sooner. My bf and I just started coming up with names yesterday and my mind is blank. I just also found out its a girl instead of a boy which i was sure of. So anyway.. I want some good ideas to help me contribute to the list.
Her sister's name is Serenity Cadence and I regret her name is so long.. but i still like it.
One name I thought of is Veera, it was my great aunt's name and I liked it. My bf has come up with:

Gweniveer (something his mom always liked)
MaryJane (of course)
Freya (I like it but I feel like it's a super common name in the "I name my kids river, canyon, and purple crowd".. though that shouldn't mean anything)
My mom likes Sandra (yuck) and shayla (no).
I like Olivia but my cousins daughter's names are Olivia and Serena, trend?

My brother just had a baby girl a couple months ago, too. Her name is Lois Valentine.

For sure I know that I don't want a made up name or an oddly spelled name. Just a relaxed, simple, nice name that isn't too common. We may use either Diana or Susan as a middle name in honor of her deceased grand-mother or Leigha/Lee because her grand-father's middle name is Lee and my bf wants to include him somehow that way.. I kind of would like Alice in her name in honor of my grand-mother... :) but that's my middle name. I decided that if she has features more like my family, I'll fight for Veera/or Gweniveer as Veera being her nickname. Anyway, when she comes I may not like any of these name.

Sorry but Gweniveer is just horrible. If you don't want an oddly spelled name, spell it properly-Guinevere.

Gweniveer- This is spelt horendously. Spell it Guinevere and you have a beautiful name.

MaryJane- I don't like double names at all.

Freya- Freya really isn't one of those 'river-type-names' it's a mythical name, but it's very real and very pretty. It's not even in the top 1000 for America stats.

Sandra and Shayla are so dated and ugly.

Olivia is really popular, American number 7 in 2007, even more popu;ar in England.

Leah is much prettier and less tacky than Leigha/Leigh.

Alice is lovely, Alessia and Alessandra are also favourites of mine.

Definitely agreed on the spelling comments.

Maybe it would help us to offer suggestions if you could give a better understanding of how you chose your first daughter's name. Also, what were you thinking of for boys?

(My September baby also needs a name, so I'm with you.)

Maybe you need to see your little one first. That's our plan.

The only name I really like from your options is Guinevere...but if you do use it, please don't spell it Gweniveer! That just looks ridiculous.

I agree with everyone: Guinevere is beautiful! Gweniveer...not so much. It is pronounced the same way (I assume) and you can still use the nickname Veera (or Vera) when it's spelled Guinevere. I think it's cute!

I also like Freya and Olivia. Nothing wrong with Freya, I think...not with Olivia either, but it's incredibly, ridiculously popular right now.

By the way... I actually think Lois Valentine is really cute. Here, Valentine would be pronounced Vah-len-TEEN-eh, which I like even better!

i think if you use veera, you should spell it vera, and of course the same goes with gweniveer (guinevere) and leigha (leah/lia)

i'm not a fan of maryjane, especially because you made it one word with two capital letters. what about Mary-Jane or Mary Jane instead?

Leigha is an acceptable form of Leigh, which is the feminine form of Lee.

Haha, actually, until several years back, Lee was the feminine form, then suddenly people called all thier boys Lee, so a new feminine form was made.

Sorry...totally random fact there.

"Several" years? It would have to be at least fifty years, as the Leighs and Lees I know are all between their late forties and early sixties.

I've known a couple Mary Janes in my life, neither of whom were named after pot. It was a name before it was slang for that. In fact, it was a name for a type of shoe before it was another slang term for pot and it's not even one of the slang terms for pot that is widely used anymore.

Maybe it's just really a cute name? That's what I assumed.

Mary Jane is the approximate English-Spanish translation of Marijuana (Maria- spanish for Mary; Juana- spanish for Jane), so one could argue that it's not even a slang term.
Either way, it's not an unreasonable leap when taking into account the "of course" and the fact that these people haven't even bothered to think of baby names until less than 2 weeks before the due date and the fact that they like yoo-neek spellings of otherwise acceptable names....
It's what I thought of too.

I thought exactly the same thing about Mary Jane.

I hate to say this, because you seem so excited about it, but Gweniveer is absolutely atrocious. It would make you and your husband look like complete twits throughout your daughter's life, especially when they study the Arthurian legends in 6th - 8th grade, then again in high school, and potentially in college, as well. However, I do think that Guinevere is a lovely name and Vera would be a lovely nickname for it, but I also think Vera/Veera is a beautiful name and that it's also under-used, so I would suggest you just consider that as a full first name; I would prefer the spelling with one e, but I'm less opposed to two es than I am to "Gweniveer."

I think Mary Jane is adorable, although it should be two words, not one. I would stay away from Freja/Freya, because it is a neo-Pagan name and people may assume you're Wiccan if you name your daughter that, but also because it is (and this is coming from a Wiccan!) a little silly.

I also think Leigha and Leigh are lovely names (Lee is the masculine spelling), as are Alice and Diana.

Guinevere is lovely. Vera as a nn is great. I vote for this. (PLEASE don't curse your child with Gweniveer. It looks completely illiterate.)
I also love Freya and don't find it common at all. Not in the U.S. anyway.
Olivia is way too commmon, it's top ten.
Mary Jane is too Catholic or too associated with drugs.
Sandra is ok, but dated.
Shayla... isn't that Charlotte's baby name from Sex and the City?

I'm with the whole "spell Guinevere properly" crowd on this one. Don't make fools out of yourself and your husband by making yourselves look completely illiterate.

I really quite like the name Alice actually.
