[identity profile] laminy.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
So, this: http://www.babynames.com/namelist/9645689 is my name list. Now, I am years and years and relationships away from ever having kids, so these are obviously just names that I like, not names that have actually been decided on with a husband or anything. I'd like it if people voted, because I like to know what people think, but this is actually a question post too.

So far (and it really did surprise me), three of the girl names have zero thumbs up:

Saxon Cassandra
Jory Evangeline
Penny Danneel

Penny Danneel I get, because I just kind of threw those two names together because I like Danneel and thought that it went with Penny the best, but are those names really that bad? As well, Juno Tuesday is a bit more of a guilty pleasure, celebrity baby name. I do really love both of the names, particularly Juno, and I just figured if I ever actually named a kid Juno, nobody would bat an eye at a crazy middle name.

So, let me know what you think, if you want. These are the names that I like right now, and yes, they are in order of how much I like them. Any other suggestions, like switching middle names or something? Or just names that you think that I would like. Thanks!

I've never met or heard of anyone named Saxon before, but it definitely strikes me as a very masculine name. Whereas Cassandra is very feminine, so I just really don't think they go together at all ... individually I like both names, but not together.

I kind of like the sound of Jory Evangeline.

Penelope? (Love Penelope, don't mind Penny as a nn, but it's too childish by itself.)

I agree that Saxon is a boy's name to me. Jory and Danneel look made up, and I don't think Jory flows well with Evangeline.

I think Olive as a given name is a little silly -- use Olivia and call her Olive?

I admit that I actually like the sound of Juno Tuesday, but especially with the movie, it would look way too celebrity baby name ish, IMO.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bijou

In addition to being a famous porn film, "Bijou" is also a popular pet name, so I wouldn't subject my child to wearing that name. If you like the meaning, there are other names that represent preciousness and value, some which are the names of precious stones and others that just mean "precious" or "special."

I also can't understand why one would want to name their child after the Saxons unless that's an important part of your heritage or your a huge European history buff; I also think it would be more appropriate as a boy's name - it just sounds very masculine to me.

I think the middle names you've chosen are lovely, specifically Evangeline and Cassandra, and I would hope to convince you to use those names instead of pairing them with those choppy, gimicky first names. I especially dislike the combination of Saxon Cassandra both because of the sound and the conflicting historical references.

I personally like Daneel, but it is another masculine name, so I would prefer to see it paired with a name that is less of a nickname or more dignified than Penny, which I don't feel would age well with a child or serve her well professionally; alternatively, I think Daneel would make a lovely, unusual first name, although it would probably often be misheard as "Danielle." I have to admit that I mainly like it because it is part of a name used for one of Asimov's better known robot characters featured in The Caves of Steel.

Oh, I'd also take the extra N out of "Daneel."

They might be anyway but Penny and Jory don't really seem like full names to me. Jory and Evangeline and Saxon and Cassandra don't really go together, in my opinion. I do like Evangeline and Cassandra but maybe with different first or middle names.

From your list I also like Violet, Lucy and Juno (in a guilty pleasure sort of way) for girls. For boys I like Jude Theo (A lot. Although I'd like it even better if it was Jude Theodore, Sam (but as Samuel), Noah and Sebastien (although with the e it makes me want to pronounce in a french way).

I think Noah Samuel would sound good. Or Jude Sebastian. Or Lucy Violet.

This was a very long comment!

I think Cassandra Lucille sounds much better than Lucy Cassandra.
Jude Theo I think is too short, it looks incomplete to me. I think Theodor Jude would be better.
Sage Grey to me looks just like two color names put together.
Noah Cash to me sounds like a Latino person saying they have no money, "no cash". =/ Same with Juno Tuesday - 'you know, Tuesday, it's Tuesday man!"
Jack Theo sounds too short to me too, I think something like Jackson Theodor is better.

Evangeline was my paternal grandmother's name. Her middle name was a family last name, Ayer. I think Evangeline is such a full name it should be a first name. Suggestions are Evangeline Lily, as the actress, just because I think it flows well/sounds nice. Also Evangeline Marie, Evangeline Estelle.

For the girls I like Olive Blake, Ruby Blake, Lucy Cassandra, Jory Evangeline, and Violet.

I like Sage Grey, Sam, and Nate for the boys.

I would like Cassandra Lucille best, but I also like Lucille Cassandra. I'm not personally a fan of giving nicknames as full first names, so I'll always go with the full version of the name. I just know too many people with nickname-ish first names who regret that their names are so childish, especially my cousin Katie who goes by Kate now that she's in college. I still use my nickname, Jackie, but I like the option of using Jacqueline when appropriate.

No problem! Would you use middle names for Violet, Sam, and Nate?

About nicknames, I agree with [livejournal.com profile] perfectcherry in that really childish sounding names like Penny and Katie can be a disadvantage to a child in a professional career. As a Katie in a professional field, I have a little experience with this, and while I'm never, ever called Katherine by anyone, I am so glad I can put it on official documents and publications. I don't want my future employers or journal reviewers to picture a five-year-old girl when they read my name, and I think a similar thing would happen with Penny.

IMO that's what nns/fns are for; if you really love a childish-sounding name but want your child to have a professional/mature-sounding option when they grow up.

I know you don't like Juno just because of the movie (I liked Delilah long before the song and hate the song for it), but it's something to consider if it doesn't die down. Tuesday's just a little too out there for me, especially with that first name.

This happened to me, too, and usually it comes down to three reasons: (1) A simple matter of personal taste of the rater, and (2) the names don't flow together well, (3) it won't work well in real life. A lot of your middle names are great as firsts (Evangeline, Cassandra), while the others are a bit too masculine for a girl (Saxon, Bijou).

And I admit, I fall under Reason 1: Some of these names are quite out-there. I won't say weird, except under the case of Bijou and Skandar. And Brawley is a WTF? (A guilty pleasure, maybe?) But otherwise... they aren't bad.

The only name that really struck me as "wtf?" was Shalom. Even as a middle name I think it sounds kind of...silly. I'm assuming you know it's a hebrew word & if you're using it for the meaning of 'peace' then I guess that's nice but it can also mean hello or goodbye and that just seems so strange to me. Also, it just sounds really harsh to me. But I didn't think anything else was particularly bad. Most of it was very much not my style, but definitely not horrible!

Oh okay, well then I guess just keep in mind that it could read as "____ hello" or "____ goodbye"!

I think Saxon is a really cute girl name. Who cares if it's technically a 'boy name'. I know a boy named Avery and it works fine with him. I see most of the new names that are coming out as more gender neutral.

I also looove Saoirse Shalom.
