[identity profile] sdjma.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

My father's name was Paul.

We would like to give the baby a middle name for my father.  If it is a boy, that's easy.  But what about a girl?  I'm not too into Paulette/Pauline/Paula... but, honestly, I haven't found any P names that I like for girls, except Priya, which I love, but since we aren't Indian, I would feel weird giving the baby that name.

Are there any P girl names that aren't awful?

I like classic names that are not super popular, although I'll admit that I do love some of the ones that are super popular right now (Isabella, Sophia, etc).  Generally I like traditional names that are... I don't know how to describe it, maybe pretty sounding?  Multi-syllables?  Names like Rebecca, Arianna, Joanna, Hannah, Molly...  I guess they all have soft sounds.  Anyway, any suggestions?

Thanks!

Philippa (or with one P), nickname Pippa. I love Priya too, but I can see your point when it comes to that one...

I also like Phaedra.

I like Penelope (nn Penny). Piper is also one of my favorite P names, but not quite as classic feeling as the other names you mentioned liking.

Patricia, Paloma, Pallas, Pamela, Pandora, Patrice, Pearl, Perlita, Perdita, Phyllis, Pia (literally means "girl" in Danish, but is a fairly common German girl's name), Phoebe, Petra, Portia, Priscilla

I actually do like Paula, however, and I think it would make a lovely middle name, although I understand if it's not appealing to you.

please not Perdita, it means both "loss" and "secretion" in italian :/

Pia also means "pious" in italian

Portia!

I'm considering that one.. I also like Penelope but I hate Penny as a nickname (it was my cousin's dog's name).

But I like Paula too.. I think it's because I had a camper i liked named Paula. All my name ideas are from kids I had at camp who I liked, it's kinda funny.

I love the "related names" feature on behindthename.com. You can filter by gender, as well, in the top right-hand corner. See if you like any of those?

What was your dad's middle name? Maybe his middle name would work better?

Or find a name that has the same meaning as Paul.

Yeah, there weren't many names when I looked up "small" lol
Oh, what about names meaning "little" (with things following such as 'little womanly one')? Would that be stretching it too far?

"Little" girl names (har har I'm funny)
Allison (Little Alice)
Carolyn (Little womanly one)
Coralie (Little maiden)

P names are hard.
Paige
Peyton (One Tree Hill fan lol)

Oh! Is there anything that reminds you of your dad? For instance, if roses reminded you of him you could use the name Rosalyn. Or what words describe him? Maybe use those to find a name instead of small/little!

I'm afraid I won't be much help, as my favorite P name for a girl is Parvati :) (like the indian goddess)

How about Polly ? sounds like Paul, too.

I like Priscilla, but I'm in Italy and it's Pree-SHIEL-lah here

I don't necessarily love the name Pamela, but I think it fits in pretty well with the kinds of names that you say you like ... it occurred to me right away because I read a book called this last year by Samuel Richardson.
