So, my English professor took attendance today, and there is a guy in my class named Joaquin. Except for one thing: the guy pronounces it joe-ah-kin.

Is this an actual pronuncation of it, or were his parents (or him, if he purposely changes the pronunciation) just being stupid? I have never heard that particular pronunciation before (I've only ever heard the wah-keen pronunciation), so I guess that I could be the stupid one here.

That's how I pronounced it back when I didn't know how to pronounce it...I still like that pronunciation though, but it does come off as though you mispronounce your own name =\.

I believe the correct pronunciation is Hwah-KEEN.

Yep, Wah-keen is how I've always been told it's pronounced and that's how the actor Joaquin Phoenix says it.
Joe-ah-kin just sounds wrong in my opinion.

maybe your professor is the stupid one? :P or did the guy himself pronounce joe-ah-kin?

Seems more like his parents were stupid.

The name of St. Joachim is pronounced JOE-ah-kim in English, so this pronunciation of Joaquin doesn't seem too out there, to me.

If he's Portuguese, it's Joo-uh-kim (near silent m)

If it was pronounced in a German fashion, it would be something like "yo-a-kwin".

I have a Joaquin in one of my classes pronounced jay-quin.

I always thought it was pronounced jac-win (like Jacques). I still maintain that that's way more fun to say than why-keen.

Maybe it's whoever started with the 'wah-keen' that was saying it wrong, and everyone just thinks that's how it's supposed to be pronounced because it's the pron. most heard because of actor Joaquin Phoenix. I say this because according to thinkbabynames.com, it's supposed to be pron. 'jo-a-quin'. Personally, I don't like either pronunciation.

In my town there is a street named after a dude whose name was Joaquim. It is pronounced Jo-ack-um, and the city even made an official statement to the press concerning the pronounciation of the name because they were getting flack for it. So I guess there really is more than one pronounciation. It was the man's name, and this was MANY decades ago.

I've always been under the impression it was pronounced "yo-keen", due to media pronounciatons. Never met a Joaquin though so I've only been able to go by what others say!
