We've all heard of the name Bernadette for a girl. I've even known a Bernadetta. But I've never met (until I started my Adolescent Literature Interpretation course, that is), a

Benedette.

Apparently, we're either supposed to call her Benny or Ned.

I think Benedetto is Italian for Benedict, so the female form would probably be Benedetta, and this might be a Frenchization of an Italian name? Or something? Either way, I've never heard it this way, and I don't like it either.

Funny coincidence - a book I'm reading right now (What's Bred in the Bone by Robertson Davies) has a character named Mary-Benedetta, and they call her Mary-Ben. They're all Catholic and Mary-Something in that family.

Benedetta does seem to be an Italian name, so I guess (hope) Benedette is another version of that. I'm not a fan either.

I just started working with a Benedette. I'd never hear it before, either, and thought it was ugly at first. It's been growing on me, though.

I also know a Bernadine (burn-a-dean).

Huh. Not sure what I think. I don't like the way it looks, but when said it's not too awful. I have a friend named Bernetta .
