[identity profile] shishenbelle.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
So i am only bringing this name up because it has been said before and wasnt completely trashed right away. I am usually against the place name thing for babies, but for some reason this one has stuck with me and i think its adorable.

Thoughts, opinions, comments, ideas etc welcomed, (keep in mind, im not having babies any time soon and i am not planning to name a baby this, i just think it sounds interesting)

Tennessee

Do you think there are too many letters? Would the kid constantly get asked the pick up line..."are you from Tennessee, cause you're the only ten i see?"

things to think about :)

**EDIT** Tennessee Elizabeth has just been added to my list of favorite baby names :)

i like tennessee better than brooklyn, dakota, and all the other trendier place names. plus..it reminds me of tennessee williams. :) i think the kid might get teased a little, but not too much. their name would definitely get misspelled all the time though.

I personally dont like names that infer to a place or time, like April, Georgia, etc. I dont think they make sense. If you werent born in April, or in Georgia, why would you name your kid that, and if you Were, I think its lame. Like Hey my name is Georgia and I live in.. You Guessed it, Georgia!
So, I wouldnt do it. :]

Most place names as first names are crap.

Exceptions are place names that were first names in their own right long before the place name (e.g., Georgia, Sydney).

It makes me think "Williams" but I rather like it.

I love the time/place names.

Nowadays, I doubt a kid would be teased for the name since there are so many Dakotas and Madisons out there.

i think tennessee is adorable. im usually one for names like that having some kind of meaning, for example if you or the father were from tennessee or something, but this one is so darn cute, i think i would make an exception. :)

Except that "Tennessee" was a nickname for Mr. Williams. His real first name was Thomas.

I'm not a fan of place/time names either, and while I don't immediately hate Tennessee (like I do Dakota) it's not my favorite either. I understand how you feel though, I have a single vice for place/time names as well in Austin, but since I actually live in (san antonio not Austin) I won't ever use it as that makes it even more lame in the grand scheme of things.

Its such a hard one for little ones to spell. Im 26 and I still have trouble spelling it properly.

Im still in the process of picking a name for my son w/my husbands help, and the one thing we've agreed on so far is to make it somewhat easy for the kid/teachers when he gets older, because I remember learning to spell my brothers name before I did my own, because his was easier.

As far as the spelling troubles, I don't think it would be as difficult for a child spelling his/her name as it might be for, say, you or me spelling the name of a state that we don't live in (or anywhere near, for that matter). So I don't think the spelling is a problem--it's the kid's name! My last name is hard to spell, but I still learned it just as quickly as all the other kids my age.

Anyway I think it's cute =D And the pick-up line made me laugh. If my name were Tennessee and people said that to me, it would be a great way to weed certain people out right away. LOL

Hmm. I'm from Canada, so my knowledge of different states is extremely selective and cliche. Am I the only one who gets an immediate mental picture of people line-dancing?

I don't like it AT ALL.

ugh. don't move to westchester either. i'm assuming you mean westchester county in ny. i grew up there. it's overpriced and full of snobs. i would not want my kids going to school with the kids over there.

Gosh, I think it's horrible. I hate "place names" to begin with, but out of the bunch (Dakota, Sydney, Paris).. this has gotta be my very least favorite.

this coming from someone who lives in Tennessee.........

DO NOT name your kid that. Oh man. It just gives me this god awful mental picture of the stupid rednecks they always put on the news or some live broadcast that are suppose to represent all the other normal people living here. They always pick the moron with 1 black/brown/yellow tooth that can't read, and has on a flannel shirt. Now even though I live in TN and I am no where near this kind of person, when I think of Tennessee as a name .... that is the kind of person I imagine.

Yuh.

I think the name sucks. I wouldn't worried about getting that pick up line because, quite frankly, they'd be having a giggle instead.

Yes, of course.

The name Georgia is the feminine version of George. It's been a name for a lot longer than the state has existed.

Sydney is a surname often used as a first name (var. Sidney). The Australian city is named after someone called Sydney.

A lot of the colonies in America were named after monarchs of England. So Carolina is based on the Latin for Charles (which is Carolus, I think), Virginia is for Elizabeth I (the Virgin Queen), Maryland is for Mary II (I think), and Georgia is from the Latin for George.

Personally, I don't think it's a good name. I mean, yeah, there's Tennessee Williams, but I just really hate place names.

I don't automatically hate "place" names like some people, but I think Tennessee is awful. It's too long and it just doesn't even sound like a name.

Yes I think the child would get made fun of.

Tennessee?

I don't mind place names that have been traditional names, such as Virginia or Georgia, or Carolina. But Tennessee? No.

LOL at the person talking about naming kids after times and places. My name is May, and I constantly get asked whether I'm born in the month of May. Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm born in July.

I have a hard time spelling that name as it is... but I can't talk. I'm naming my son Vegas xD (yes, with Lee as a middle name so he can use it if he wants)

Mmm good point. But I don't immediately think of it either (evidently)

Fair enough. I usually think of that right away, but that's probably because I took Russian History my freshman year and I had to do several reports on Georgia. ^^
