i have a predicament. my middle name is jane, which i love and plan to pass down to my first daughter as her middle name. the problem is that all of my favorite names are only one syllable. do you think something short like claire jane (just an example) sounds bad? i really don't like the idea of using more than one middle name either. any ideas on what to do?

also, what type of person do you think of when you hear the following names? (physically, personality-wise, etc.)

girls:
adora
ainsley
aria
bree
eden
elle
fern
gemma
hana (pronounced HAH-nuh, rhymes with donna)
ivy
jane
lux
nico
penny
ruby
tess
tierney

boys:
allister
atticus
cillian
finn
jude
kai
kieran

I really like Ainsley Jane, Ivy Jane and Aria Jane. I think you need more than one syllable.

I like Kieran and Noah for boys, the rest, eh. My sister's name is Shannan; I think Shannon for a boy has cycled out a little.

Many people have 2 2-syllabel names... but 2 1-syllabel almost leaves something to be desired because it's so short. On the other hand it may make a powerful name. Personally, I like mixing syllabels... How about for a middle name choosing a name you like and adding a -Jane on the end?
For example: Eden Ivy-Jane ... I don't know if that one works that well, but the idea may....

girls:
adora - I think this one's cute.
ainsley - I know 6 of them in real life, all are aged 18-25 so it's really common for me...
aria - good middle name
bree - I don't care if it's cheese, I think it's adorable
eden - pretty (and 2 syllabels! Eden Jane is gorgeous!)
elle - cute and simple, I like "Ella" better though.
fern - a shrub-like plant? I don't know about this one...
gemma - meh.
hana - it would get confused with "hannah" was too often.
ivy - beautiful
jane - simple and a good middle name
lux - no.
nico - it's a boys name...
penny - ew.
ruby - pretty, but can sound really trailer trash when paired with the wrong middle name (for example, my friend "Ruby Jean")
tess - I HATED "tess of d-urbervilles"... and that's what I think about when I hear this name
tierney - I actually really like this name.

boys:
allister - the bad guy from Passions (even though I don't watch it, I connect the two)... I don't like it.
atticus - a cool sounding name, but I don't know for a child?
cillian - um... not really?
finn - I love it... I like "Finley" personally
jude - not a favorite, bad name association
kai - my boyfriends name, I love it.
kieran - cute, but sorta trendy, eh?
luca - meh.
nico - I don't really like it...
noah - I love Noah, it's beautiful
sage - a girls name to me... it sounds so feminine...

Beautiful names for the most part though :)!

How about for a middle name choosing a name you like and adding a -Jane on the end?
For example: Eden Ivy-Jane ... I don't know if that one works that well, but the idea may.

I did this with my daughter.. wanted to use Rena (Renee) because of family signifigance.. but paired it with Violet because I loved it so much.. so she became Ivy Violet-Rena. But I generally jut refer to her as Ivy Violet for simplicity's sake. =D

You daughter has a beautiful name btw :-)

Haha thanks! I didn't make it, so some of it even makes me uncomfortable.. LOL I normally try not to use it in communities, since the last thing I want is a flame-war.. but I forgot this time.. LOL

And thank you! =D

i think claire jane is cute, but i think a two syllable name would sound better with jane as a middle, like clara jane for instance,

girls:
adora - pass
ainsley - I personally can't get past the 'ains' sound which reminds me quite a bit of anus.
aria - better than Adora
bree - If it weren't for Brie cheese, this would be cute
eden - Love this! And Eden Jane is cute too
elle - Too nicknamish for a full name, IMO. I know a baby named Elle Marie, and to me it sounds like Elmer-y.. =/ Plus Elle & Jane are two magazines.. not that it really matters.. but they are.
fern - This is nice, not so much with Jane though
gemma - Gemma is really cute, Gemma Jane is not so much
hana - Really cute, but if you have to tell people how it's pronounced before you even use it.. take that as a sign
ivy - My daughter's name. Love it! Ivy Jane is really really really cute!
jane - Love Jane too! It's not really that common, anymore either...
lux - moving on..
nico - Sounds like a boy's name to me..
penny - Nicknamish.. she wouldn't have a full name to fall back on as an adult.. but otherwise okay.
ruby - I really like this! And Ruby Jane is really adorable too.. but I've heard others say it reminds them of 'trash..' so that perception alone has kept me from loving it..
tess - prefer Tessa.. but Tess is cute.
tierney - Please please please no.. I'm begging you. Tyranny is not a good thing to be associated with.

boys:
allister - Really nice, but pretentious.
atticus - Not really feeling it..
cillian - As in "silly-in?" If that's how it's pronounced, I would think long and hard before saddling a kid with "silly" in their name
finn - Huckleberry
jude - Very nice!
kai - Seems incomplete to me.. but not bad at all.
kieran - Not a favorite, but not terrible
luca - Very nice
nico - I suppose..
noah - Very nice!
sage - I like it better on a girl
seamus - Very nice, but might lead to a lifetime of misprononciation
shannon - Like it better on a girl
tegan - I don't like the sound of this at all.

I don't really like a one-syllable first name with Jane, but some might work. I don't suppose you could lengthen Jane to maybe Janet or something? Jane is a lovely middle name... I hope you can find a 2 or more syllable name you absolutely love

girls:
adora - sounds like adore with an A
ainsley - not my style
aria - quite cool
bree - knew a bitchy girl called this, so that's out for me
eden - very nice
elle - again bitchy connection, but a cute name nonetheless
fern - knew a nice girl at school named this, only suits certain people
gemma - too common for my liking
hana - there was a girl in my class at school who spelt her name and said it the way you do, she was always pronouncing it for people, everybody called her Hannah
ivy - great name
jane - it sounds plain to me, but would be as a middle name
lux - reminds me of soap
nico - oh yes! I knew a girl who called herself this, it was short for Nicole
penny - very cute, I like it
ruby - I don't think it's trashy, I love it
tess - I also prefer Tessa
tierney - Never heard this before... how would you pronounce it?

boys:
allister - knew a stupid boy at school named this, put me right off xD
atticus - whenever I hear this name it reminds me of having to study To Kill A Mockingbird in school...
cillian - there's an actor with this name and it suits him, so cool
finn - not my style
jude - ew reminds me of either girls or Jude Law
kai - Maori word for food o_O
kieran - not a favourite, but I don't hate it
luca - it feels like it's missing the S to make it Lucas
nico - I'm weird, I prefer it on girls as a nickname xD
noah - Very cute
sage - Um...
seamus - reminds me of a drunk Irish guy
shannon - I always thought of this as a girls name
tegan - like M with an R

LOL sorry I wasn't helpful, I just wanted to say what I thought!

Ainsley makes me think of my friend's daughter. That's a cute name. I don't like Adora at all, it makes me think of some fairy tale character. Bree, Eden, Fern and Gemma are terrific names. Hana pronounced that way makes me think of Henna... and what are the chances anyone will pronounce it right? Lux and Tierney... no.

As for the boys, the only names I really like a Kieran, Noah, Sage, Luca and Seamus.

ainsley - i have always liked this name, it makes me think of a little girl at boarding school
aria- opera
bree-now it just makes me thing of desperate housewives.
eden- i like it, makes me think of a hippie kid
elle- i like Elle, but i prefer Ella....
fern- i dont like it, it makes me think of an outcast
gemma- used to be a favorite, i think its sweet
hana (pronounced HAH-nuh, rhymes with donna)- there was a skiier with this name, everytime she skiied in the olympics they prounounced her name wrong. i think its pretty, but good luck getting people to call her that.
ivy- i dont love it
jane- i adore Jane, its simple, but beautiful
lux- one of my favorite favorite names. It makes me think of a sweet innocent girl but at the same time one tough cookie :)
nico- hate it.
penny- ok, too plain
ruby- love ruby, but its one of those names that is adorable when she is 5 but i cant imagine a 24 year old being taken seriously
tess- LOVE TESS
tierney- LOOOOOVE Tierney, its in my top 5 for girl

boys:
allister- i like allister, but his nickname would be al, or ali, and i hate al, and like ali for a girl
atticus- to kill a mockingbird is one of my all time favorite books, this is a great name! i think of a smart, well liked kid
cillian- would you prounounce it Kill-ian or Sill-ian?
finn- LOVE LOVE LOVE! this is a top 5 for me.
jude- not a big fan
kai- its ok, not a big fan
kieran- love Kieran
luca- more of a girls name
nico- not a big fan
noah- alright, but makes me think of a dorky kid for some reason
sage- its ok, but i dont love it
seamus- Here is my issue with this name, i think its a great Irish name, and the prounounciation is so nice - but the way it looks, its just begging to be made fun of. Seamus! no kid is going to figure out how to spell it and i just htink its asking for trouble, but i do love the name
shannon- i still think of this for a girl- or if you have a surfer/skater/snowboarder kid it could work.
tegan- i like teagan! i feel like he would be a cool kid, athletic and fun

i adore Lux!

I think it has potential to be adorable for a 4 year old, cool for a 12 year old and just plaine gorgeous as the girl grows up - I agree though Lux Jane just seems a little short- but i like the idea of passing down Jane - of your girl choices, i think Tierney Jane is pretty!

I like Cillian, but i think you would always get people prounouncing it wrong, on the other hand Killian just reminds me of the beer :)

I like it! Lux is beautiful, and you are right, she will never be called Lux Jane, i hate my middle name, it doesnt sound right with my first name and its a family name that just doesnt work for a girl - so i dont use it, most people dont even know it.

good luck!!!

I honestly think the two/three syllable names sound better with a one syllable middle name- Jane is a great middle name i'm using it myself!

girls:
adora- ehhh annoying.
ainsley- Too trendy
aria- Ah-ree-uh? If it's pronounced that way then i love it, it's musical & pretty.
bree- eeee, yuck. cheese, i dont get why this is becoming popular.
eden- This, i could like a lot if i made myself.
elle- I love it, but it's one one syllable name which annoys me.
fern- I dont like this at all...i think of dinosaurs for some reason, no logic!!
gemma- Hate it, every Gemma i know has been awful & annoying.
hana (pronounced HAH-nuh, rhymes with donna)- I pronounce donna so it rhymes with connor, which doesnt seem at all like hah-nuh. so pronouncing hana like donna is pretty odd to me & i don't like it.
ivy- Cute middle name, not sure about it as a first name.
jane- Same as IVY
lux- this isnt a name, it's not feminine at all- therefore i hate!
nico- Great boys name..
penny- Yuck, old ladyish.
ruby- My best friends name, so i love it.
tess- Again, i can't stand one syllable first names, they should be longer & shortened! So Tessa is okay.
tierney- hmm... ick.

boys:
allister- It's okay
atticus- Oh someone likes to kill a mockingbird...
cillian- I think i like this one.
finn- Great middle name.
jude- Great middle name
kai- I know a Kai spelt Kia.. still pronounced like Kai- it caused no end of trouble! I don't like it presonally.
kieran- I hate Kieran, but i know a Ciaran.. Kye-run. I like that a lot.
luca- way way way way waaaay prefer Lucas
nico- love it (for a boy!)
noah- adorable
sage- Not a fan, especially not for a boy/
seamus- I love it more thanks to Harry Potter! But i wouldnt use it myself.
shannon- Not a good boys name at all.
tegan- I think of this as a girls name, & i don't like it either way.

I just realised you didnt ask for opinions on the names... sorry! i can't be bothered to change it now lol

Donna rhymes with Connor... nothing else i can think of!
Hana rhymes with spanner.. maybe i am pronouncing Hana wrong, because i always thought it was just another way of spelling Hannah.. but in no way does Donna rhyme with piranha/nirvana..etc
I'm from England.

As one sylabal names don't go so well with Jane, you could change it a bit. Like use Janie or Jana or some other varation?
From your list it doesn't really go with Bree, Elle or Lux. But it's fine with the others! I really like
Adora Jane
Hana Jane
Ivy Jane
Nico Jane (though Nico seems more masculine)
Ruby Jane

From your boys list I really like
Finn
Kai
Kieran
Luca
Nico
Noah
