I think it's a personal choice. It's a family thing for me to have two middle names, so I plan to do it. For other people, it's not important or necessary. To each his/her own :)

two middle names is fine to me. i think a child needs at least one, but more than two is too much. so one or two is perfect.

i will most likely give my kids two middle names, unless their last name is hyphenated, in which case they will only have one.

We're doing it. I have two middle names. Only the first initial of the first name is ever used really, but I'm proud of having a second middle name.

I'm living in The Netherlands, and it's common here. So I'm fine with it.

Besides...it's a nice way to use a name you love and honor someone, or honor two people at the same time.

I like it and I do it. My first is Cressa May Henri (Lastname) and my beaner if she is a girl will be Cora Rosemary Noreen (Lastname) or if somehow they're wrong and the beaner's a boy, Henry Isaac Andrew (Lastname). I'm not sure why I like it so much, but I do.

I have three and I really don't like it.
I also don't like my specific middle names, which may have something to do with it, but not entirely.

I like the dichotomy that two names bear. It's like having an alternate identity. Two is ok, three becomes mental.

I like it. Three of the four names we have planned have two middle names (the fourth has two non-hyphenated, non-mashed first names; Shea Elliot wouldn't work that way), and it's mostly because the names mean something to us. The others are Isaac Gary Arthur (I hope she'll agree to using Arthur instead of the other option...), where the middle names are for both my great-uncle and brother (Gary) and her grandfather; Delta Lorraine Jeannette (our grandmothers are the first two names; Jeannette has other meaning); and Jonas Ezekiel Samael because we love the meanings. Shea Elliot's middle name will be Anna for me and her mother, and the first names are for our best friends, our boys.

This, plus it seems really excessive and pretentious to me. Or like they couldn't decide on which names they liked best, so they threw them all together. Or, worse, like they bore a Mary Sue. =P

Very rarely, I'll see a 3-name combo that I actually like, but for the most part it just sounds like the person is talking about two different kids.

Most times the middle name doesn't even come up, let alone a second. I think it's unnecessary, but it doesn't do any harm either.

My dad (and his brother), my sister, and I all have two middle names and I plan on giving my children two middle names as well... unless my future husband really hates the tradition.

I personally wouldn't do it but if it's your cup of tea, go for it! I think it is really hard to find names that work together and don't sound like 2 different kids though!

I think in general it would just complicate things with paperwork and bills and documentation and stuff. You'd have to deal with banks and schools and such being confused over whether Joseph R Smith is the same as Joseph RA Smith and Joseph Ronald Anthony Smith, etc. And if your child later gets married and takes his/her spouse's last name but keeps all of his/her original names in there somewhere, five names are kind of a handful.

That said, I don't think it's a terrible idea if you have a good reason for having two middles. I think it's OK if you want your child to have both his/her middle name and your maiden name, but don't want a hyphenated last name for example. I think it's also OK if one or both middle names are used to honor someone or for another specific personal reason, or if you and your partner cannot agree on just one middle name. Using two middle names just because you think both sound good seems kind of pretentious and unnecessary though.

To me, it is a waste. You can't put them on official documents so no one will ever know they have them.

I don't really 'think' anything of it. Why should anyone care if a child has two [or even more] middle names?
It doesn't bother me either way, there are worse things in the world.

Unless the two names are inexcusably bad of course, in which case I would dislike them them singularly as well so that's of no consequence.
