I heard this name today.

It was pronounced kind of like.... SAA-mi-a

not the short a of Sam, more rounded. The i was kind of short... almost saam-ya

It stood out to me because I've never heard of it before but it seems kind of simple. Not sure that I love it, but it's refreshing.

Samia! That was my neighbor's mother's name! Well, she was my neighbor, too. They were Egyptian. Samia and Fawzy. They were awesome people, I loved them. And she prn it the same way you describe. So I'm figuring it's an Arabic name.
