Is Judah a terrible name?

My mom and MIL both hate it. Mom says it's like "Judas" and my MIL says it's "Hippie Dippie, and you're not religious or Jewish so why use it?"

And if I ever have another baby (likely in the next two years, we just had our first) - Judah is number one on my list.

What are your thoughts? And what works as a middle? Judah Simon is cute to me.

I like Judah. It's different but not weird. Judah Simon seems a little old-fashioned as a combo, but they do sound good together.

I also like just plain old Jude a lot as a name.

omg I had the SAME discussion with my mom about the name Genesis... I told her that was #1 for me in the girl department and she looked at me and said "aren't you an atheist?"

Ehhh it's okay, but I like Judas and Jude better. Not to mention it sounds a lot like Judea, which would be like naming your kid Babylon or something.

But, I don't think it goes well with Simon. It sounds really overly Christian.

I don't care for it, but I don't think it's a horrendous name, like Zuma Nesta Rock, for instance.

Lol, I'm not sure we should be using that one as our baseline. Everything sounds great in comparison.

BTW, if you are concerned about Judas, you may want to be aware that Judah Simon together could sound like Judasimon.

I like Judah, I just don't like that it's so obviously Biblical (but maybe that's just me).

Thank you! My husband came up with his name one day when we were brainstorming music-related baby names. We are big Beatles fans. :)

i like judah a lot! it might be odd if you arent all that religious, but i dont think its a big deal. i would pair it with something longer for a middle name... judah alexander, for example.

In fact... That's my sons name! lol
His name is Judah David!

You know.. Not many people liked the name Judah when I picked it out, but after I had my son everyone kept saying they liked the name and that they can't see him being anything other than a Judah :)

Judah was the name of the land in the Old Testament. Judas was one of the 12 apostles in the New Testament, the one who betrayed Jesus. I find them to be very different names, with very different stories behind them. Personally, I wouldn't use the name Judas, both for the association and I just don't like the name. Judah I do like.

Yeah I don't link them either, but I wouldn't be surprised if Judas and Judah are forms of the same name... like Judah being Hebrew and Judas being the Greek version of it, or something.

But, I haven't looked into that. Not that it matters... like, if you hate someone called John it's not like you can't call your kid Sean or something

Judah is nice. Although, I have a close friend named Judah and he says he rarely gets called Judah. All his friends call him 'Jude' and everyone else mistakes it for Judas, Jonah, John etc. I however still love and just suggested to our friends for their little man, surprisingly; they named him that! http://www.youcantbeserious.com.au/blog/2008/08/27/miracle-baby/ For a middle name they chose Ravi to spice it up a little given it's a fairly standard biblical name.
