I think I have finally settled on a name for my little boy.

Amaury Atreyu-Merrick ______

I know it's long, but I really wanted to incorporate Atreyu in there because it has significant meaning to me although I'm sure many of you will have negative views of it. Other than that, thoughts?

Wow. Well, the choice is yours and I can respect that not everyone sees eye to eye on all things....but your little one is going to be saddled with that FOREVER. :(

Or until he's 18 and can legally change it on his own. ;-)

How do you pronounce Amaury?

From: [identity profile] ifancylust.livejournal.com
i would've pronounced it: uh-MORE-ee.

I agree. If you want it pronounced Amari you should spell it like that. Amaury is going to be mispronounced a lot.

No. The name Maury is pronounced Maw-ree. You can't add an A at the beginning and make up a new pronunciation. It looks like a Maury, 2 Maurys, 3 Maurys....

If you're going for a Tupac Amaru vibe, spell it Amari. Either way, that is a very feminine sounding name.

Atreyu...I'm curious about the significance it has to you, as he was the boy in The Neverending Story.

How is Atreyu pronounced?

Overall I'd prefer it without the hyphen I think.

No hyphen and spell Amaury, Amari or something so it's not mispronounced. And hell, I don't like Amari anyway, but hey. At least do that much.

A bold move to ask for an opinion on a name like that in such a traditional community. I really like it, but for once have to agree with the traditionalists who urge for the most phonetic spelling. Also, I think the name is strongest without the Merrick. It takes away from the first two names.

I'm with you on the spelling of Atreyu, but I think you are going to get a lot of people guessing "A-more-ee" (as in Maury) if you spell a name pronounced "A-mar-i" like that.

Congrats on your choice. Is your little one about to be born?

Great due date. Mine is due on the cusp of the Jewish New Year, so I can fully appreciate (although I think he'll be more of a Ramadan baby).

I don't know about anyone else, but 'Amaury' just immediately makes me think 'Maury'. :-\

I think you should spell Amaury the "right" way, so that it isn't mispronounced. Remember, the poor guy is going to have the name forever, and you don't want him to hate you for naming him that because nobody can get it right. I also think, its a female name... Or at least sounds that way. =/
It also reminds me, of calamari.
I pronounced it Ah-Moor-Eeeee before I read the comments.

Isn't Atreyu a band? I mean, I can dig naming your kid whatever, but ehhhh.

I would also take out the hyphen with the middle names. If you want to give him two middle names, then so be it, but they don't need to be hyphenated.

I don't get the hyphen, if you want to give the kid two middle names then do so, but the hyphen seems extraneous. I like the sound of the first name, but not the spelling, it's just asking to be pronounced wrong.

i like that atreyu has meaning for you.

i really dislike amaury. it looks like you were trying to get kree8yv with maury. or something.

:( i don't like it at all. if you're going to use two middle names, i wouldn't put a hyphen in between them.

Atreyu--Are you a fan of the band or the Book just curious? I actually kind of like the name Atreyu. LOL

Since you asked, I will be honest: hate it. It's a very complicated and multi-syllabic name that A LOT of people are not going to be able to pronounce properly. Also, I think it sounds quite feminine, but that's just my opinion. Your kid is going to have that name for the rest of his life and will probably resent the fact that no one can spell it properly and it will probably be wrong in every newspaper or printed program.

In a perfect world, or maybe in a piece of literature, I think the name is beautiful and flows well (so I can appreciate the aesthetic), I just feel that's not practical or reasonable for a child in the real world.

Just my opinion, since you did ask. :) If you like Atreyu so much, maybe lose the bulky hypenated part and give a more spellable/pronouncable first name?

Amaury = Ah-MAW-ree in my book.

Why not go with Amari if that's the sound you're aiming at?
Otherwise it's going to be mistaken A LOT.

I don't have a problem with the hyphen, although it makes it sound like a double last name, and that could create confusion, I guess

I like Merrick, it's quite unheard of, but traditional enough.

Atreyu just sounds really bad to me if it's pronounced Ah-TREH-you like it is in the italian version, all connotations aside.

Amaury makes me think of Maury, from daytime TV, which is not good. I love Atreyu, hate the hyphen between it and Merrick.

Amaury makes me think of Maury Povich... Amari or Omari I like a lot, though. I recently met a 10yr old boy named Amari, so I've seen the name/variations on both sexes.

Atreyu I don't like at all, but it's not a bad name, just not my style... and Merrick I like a lot!

Do you pronounce it similarly to Amory? said aim-or-ree ? If its the same, I vastly prefer Amory, in fact, I love it. if it's said ah-more-ee or something else similar, i don't like it at all.

Ick is my first thought.

I'll x'th the suggestions for Amori, Amory, or Merrick. Atreyu, gross.

I know we're kind of harsh, but honestly, this is what the kid's going to have to deal with the rest of his life.
