[identity profile] babym0mma.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
hi i'm new to the community, as well as to this whole pregnancy thing!  8 wks into my first pregnancy.

i'm having trouble finding names that flow well with my new last name:  Ogle.  (pronounced OH-gull)

any ideas for either a boy or girl?  we prefer a name that ends in a consonant as opposed to a vowel.

my only ideas so far:

Boy = Cannon

Girl = Regan (but i think Regan Ogle sounds too clunky, not very feminine) or Dahlia (but the vowel at the end doesn't flow too well into Ogle)

we are looking for unique, interesting, perhaps unusual names :)

thanks in advance if you have any ideas!

Well, I can tell you Regan is not the least bit unique, unusual, or interesting. Quite the opposite, actually. Dahlia is pretty, but you're right about the flow. :[ Cannon is interesting, but I don't think it'd work as a first name. Maybe a middle one?

Since I don't really know your style, I recommend that you take Name Nerd's Naming Profile quiz; the results you get based on your answers will probably be the kind of names you absolutely love. Nymbler will suggest more names based on your tastes. I also suggest that you use Baby Name Wizard's NameVoyager; it tracks trends and popularity so that you can avoid the mainstream. Last but not least, there is the SSA's Popular Baby Name list, where you can make sure your little bundle of joy doesn't have a name that everyone else's child has, though I've found that the list on Name Nerds is a lot more accurate.

Oh, and congratulations!

I love Dahlia! I think it sounds great with your last name. Regan is OK, but I'm not much of a fan. I think Dahlia "lightens up" Ogle. With a last name like that, you want a feminine first name that's not too heavy. Something with some open vowels.

For boys, I don't like Cannon at all. Too violent and kind of silly-sounding. Maybe you would like:
Cameron
Carson
Colman
Caleb
Callum
Carter
Adrian
Devin/Devon
Simon
Rowan
Ryan
Stephen
Tristan
Jordan
Aaron
Dylan

I'm not too sure what your taste is, so I went with names that begin or end with the same sounds.

I used to teach a little boy with the OP's last name whose first name is Dylan!

Oh, for girls maybe Daisy, Violet, or Lily? (I love flower names, can't you tell?)

i think, for a girl, you need something longer and feminine. for example, i think elisabeth ogle sounds lovely.

for boys, kind of the same thing, i would go with something thats clearly a male name (more traditional, ie: not cannon) and more than one or two syllables, like nicholas or something. i think nick ogle sounds nice.

thats a toughie of a last name youve got there. my sympathies. ;)

Are you pronouncing Reagan like "ree-gan" or "ray-gun". My daughter's name is Reagan and everyone always asks which way to pronounce it so I'd thought I'd double check before giving my opinion.

Some more unusual names (girls):

Eliora
Maeve
Cicely
Amelia/Aurelia
Chiara
Feline (Fay-LEEN)
Esme
Helicia
Nina
Larissa
Noemie (No-ay-ME)
Anthea
Melanthe
Liselore
Tamsin
Halia
Allegra
Zyla

Personally, I'm not a fan of Cannon. I think first of, well, a cannon, and then of a camera (Canon).
How about Connor, Carmine, Carlo, Carter?

Well you hit the nail on the head, for a girl you need an ultra-feminine name b/c of your clunky last name.

I love Dahlia. My fav girl combo at the moment is Dahlia Isadora.
Actually, it sounds pretty nice with your surname, I love the flow of all those vowels, almost poetic. :)

some others that may go with Ogle:
Scarlett
Esmé
Seraphine
Josephine
Amelia (I love this one)
Emilia
Serena

What you could do is go to http://nymbler.com/
Enter some of your favorite names and it will generate lists of similar ones, you may like too. It's brilliant. :)

I have a Scottish tune called "Lady Catherine Ogle." I think Catherine would be a bonny name with your new surname.
